Although the idea has been floated around for months, notably by Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows, it was this past weekend that MAGA country got a real sense of not just what was possible, but what could actually materialize. It feels different hearing it this time.
In his build up to announcing former president Donald Trump as the main speaker, Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) wowed a massive Georgia crowd with a huge revelation. He promised to nominate Donald Trump to be the next Speaker of the House.
Watch the congressman deliver an absolute slam dunk for the America First movement:
Donald Trump just got officially nominated to become Speaker of the House after Republicans defeat Pelosi in November — what do you think? pic.twitter.com/AEpDmQBBlQ

“There is no greater country than America! There is no greater president than Donald J. Trump! And if you don’t mind me saying so, there is not a better member of Congress than Marjorie Taylor Greene…
Give us the ability to fire Nancy Pelosi, take back the majority, impeach Joe Biden, and I’m going to nominate Donald Trump for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives!”
I cannot think of a better troll to every pathetic, disgraceful leftist out there. Donald Trump melted brains for four years to the extent that the mere mention of his name inspires visceral disgust and immediate emotional instability. Even a year out of office, these losers still blame him for everything. Afghanistan was his fault, Russia is his fault – heck, even Will Smith is his fault.
Big Tech, Big Media, Big Medicine, Big Government, and every other Big Evil colluded in 2020 to make sure Trump would go away and that his movement and supporters would be seen as villains. They lied about Covid. They lied about George Floyd. They lied about Hunter’s laptop. They lied about Joe Biden’s corruption. They lied about January 6th in order to bar him from holding future office. Perhaps they had this in mind.
Simply put, the powers that be lied about Trump every day for four years. They did everything they could to make him go away. And now he could be taking the gavel from Crazy Nancy’s gross, wrinkled hands.
The thought is glorious.
Making this all the better is that Gaetz isn’t a lone gunner out here. Speaking at the same event was Democrat-turned-Republican congressional hopeful Vernon Jones shared his support of this vision:
“On Day One in Congress, I’ll file Articles of Impeachment against both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for the betrayal of public trust. Then I’ll cast my vote for President Trump to be Speaker and invite my colleagues to join me.”
The energy is there. Now, as far as logistics, what does that look like? What does this mean?
In its compendium House Practice: A Guide to the Rules, Precedents, and Procedures of the House, the U.S. Government Publishing Office makes clear the eligibility for Speaker:
“Article I, section 2 of the Constitution directs that the House choose its Speaker and other officers. The Speaker is the only House officer who traditionally has been chosen from the sitting membership of the House. The Constitution does not limit his selection from among that class, but the practice has been followed invariably.”
Digging into Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution hammers the point home further. Clause 5, which provides the basis for the role of Speaker, offers this pithy description:
“The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.”
Even CNN has had to admit with agony, writing “before we foreclose the idea of House Speaker Donald Trump in 2023, let me remind you that the speaker does not have to be an elected member of Congress. It can be anyone who a majority of House members choose.”
November just got a lot more interesting.
