Rev. Al Sharpton made an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program hosted by Joe Scarborough on Monday where he said what quite possibly might be the stupidest thing anyone has said while criticizing the pro-life movement in the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned.
According to Sharpton, who has the title “reverend” before his name, the pro-life movement “hijacked” the Bible and Jesus. I’m really trying to wrap my mind around this comment, but every time I attempt to step into his shoes to see his perspective on this, I feel like my brain is going to melt.
The remarks from Sharpton come in response to the Supreme Court ruling last Friday that overturned Roe and sent the issue of laws about abortion back to the states, where it rightfully belongs.
“I am incensed and insulted they have hijacked the Bible and Jesus to distort and misquote, well it’s not even a misquote — create quotes that are not there to justify a right-wing kind of ideology that would take away the rights of women and then scheduled to take other people’s rights,” Sharpton said to Scarborough during the interview, according to a report from Newsbusters.
I guess he missed the part in the Bible where God commanded humankind not to murder each other. He apparently also has no clue about the various bits in the Psalms and the prophets and the law sections of the Holy Word where it indicates pretty clearly that life is precious and begins at the moment of conception.
Therefore, by simple logic, one can deduce that God would hate abortion. If God the Father hates abortion, so does Jesus, who is God the Son. They are the same God, just different persons. You’d think a “reverend” would have a basic grasp of theology, but that appears to not be the case.
“And what is strange to me, Joe, they can see a scripture that is not there about abortion, but they couldn’t see love your neighbor when it came down to putting things through that would help the poor and help the needy,” he added, according to the Daily Wire.
Sharpton then took an opportunity to blast progressives for not showing up to vote back during the 2016 presidential election.
“Well, look at what you got. What did you think would happen? You gave Trump three seats on the Supreme Court,” Sharpton stated during the program. “You helped do this as much as that distorted Christian language, and we need to aggressively take both of you on and say step to the side and let folks that are clear-sighted and clear-minded save this country.”
“Sharpton has often advocated for pro-choice views, including his support for Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), a black pro-choice pastor elected in 2021. Sharpton argued that the victory signaled the end of ‘legal apartheid,’” the Daily Wire reported.
“Here we have in the state of Georgia, a state deep in the heart of the old Confederacy, a state that voted to elect America’s first black vice-president in November, and a state that just voted to elect the Democratic Party’s first black senator. What does that mean about where this country is after four years of Donald Trump?” MSNBC host Scarborough went on to ask Sharpton back in January.
“It means that this country has really come back unto showing that we’re not going backwards to the days of legal apartheid or segregation and divisiveness,” Sharpton stated in his reply.
I think the one thing we can take away from this whole conversation here is that Al Sharpton does not deserve the title “reverend,” nor is he a true man of God.
