Governor John Bel Edwards, a Democrat from the state of Louisiana, has now signed a bill into law that will make it a crime to mail out abortion pills.
According to a report from The Daily Wire, the legislation, SB 388, will “prohibit criminal abortion by means of the use of an abortion inducing drug without the prescribing physician being physically present during the administration of the drug.”
The penalties for engaging in this illegal activity will result in a $1,000 fine and a possible maximum prison sentence of six months. The bill is set to go into effect on August 1.
One of the potential negatives of the bill, depending upon your perspective, is that it does not contain a provision to punish pregnant women who engage in the prohibited mailing of abortion pills.
The bill also does not ban other contraceptive methods like Plan B.
A report from Axios pointed out, “In Louisiana, pregnant people were already required to take abortion pills in a doctor’s office or a clinic, but it was not a criminal act.”
“Edwards also signed another bill into law on Tuesday that increased punishments regarding the state’s trigger law regarding abortion. The state’s current trigger law will go into effect if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade,” the Daily Wire reported.
“The new law, SB 342, would make providing an abortion punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $100,000 fine. In the case of an abortion performed after 15 weeks of pregnancy, the punishment can be up to 15 years in prison and up to a $200,000 fine,” the report continued.
This piece of legislation, like the one banning abortion pill mailing, does not have a provision for the prosecution of pregnant women.
“Louisiana is one of 13 states with trigger laws that will go into effect if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade and returns decisions regarding abortion laws to individual states. In addition to Louisiana, the other states include Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming,” the report said.
All in all, there are a total of 22 states in the country that already have laws or constitutional amendments in place to potentially ban abortion as quickly as possible if Roe were to be overturned.
The Lone Star State — Texas — already has a ban on the books for the vast majority of abortions after six weeks into a pregnancy. Oklahoma has also recently passed an almost complete ban on abortions.
Just last week, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem celebrated a major victory for pro-lifers after the state’s last remaining abortion business closed its doors. She then urged those who support the protection of life in the womb to begin focusing their efforts on providing help for moms who are in crisis.
“Abortions have stopped in South Dakota. We have prayed for this day, and now it is here,” Noem said in a tweet. “Now, we must redouble our focus on taking care of mothers in crisis. Help is available for you. Adoption is an option. You are never alone.’
We must continue to press for the kind of results we’re seeing in South Dakota in every state in the country. Life begins at the moment of conception. That is not just a statement made by those of the Christian faith. Many doctors, biologists, and scientists share that same view, which is supported by scientific data.
It’s time to end the murder of the unborn.
