Pro-life activists all over the country are celebrating the landmark Supreme Court decision Friday that overturned Roe v. Wade, which is the ruling that legalized abortion in the United States.
The court, in a 6-3 decision, stated that there was no constitutional right to murder an unborn child — and that’s what abortion is — reverting the issue back to the states.
As the news broke, according to the Daily Wire, cheers exploded from a group of pro-life supporters who were outside the court right after the ruling was announced.
Many pro-life leaders, happy as they were with the decision, pointed out that the real battle was just starting, as there are still many states (California and New York) that have policies on the books that allow for women to have abortions.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America stated that this was a historic day for pre-born children in the U.S.
“Today marks an historic human rights victory for unborn children and their mothers and a bright pro-life future for our nation,” she went on to say. “Today the Supreme Court, in line with modern science and overwhelming public consensus, recognized the truth in every mother’s heart and that pro-life advocates have argued all along: unborn children are human beings, deserving of protection.”
Dannenfelser then added that now pro-lifers across the country need to go on the offensive.
“An entirely new pro-life movement begins today. We are ready to go on offense for life in every single one of those legislative bodies, in each statehouse and the White House. Over the next few years we will have the opportunity to save hundreds of thousands, even millions of lives by limiting the horror of abortion in many states,” Dannenfelser stated.
Founder and president of And Then There Were None, Abby Johnson, stated that this decision has been a long time coming.
“The Court not only overturned Roe but flat out rejected the argument that women need abortion to achieve their dreams, have the careers they want, and ultimately deny their femininity. This is a decision that pro-lifers have long-awaited and I am so humbled to have been a part of that fight for the last thirteen years since walking away from Planned Parenthood,” she went on to say.
Johnson then talked about the “utter destruction that the physical act of abortion causes on the unborn baby and the mother but the immediate aftermath of the decision on the woman.”
She then added that the “fight over abortion is moving to the states – instead of one fight, we now have 50. But there is nothing greater to fight for than the lives of the innocent,” echoing the sentiments of many others in the pro-life movement.
Executive Director of ProLove Ministries, Pamela Whitehead, is also happy with the court’s ruling.
“Today is a cause for celebration – a celebration of the recognition that Roe was wrongfully decided almost 50 years ago, that the argument that women need abortion to succeed in life was seen as a losing argument, that innocent life will automatically be protected in more than half the states in this nation,” Whitehead said.
This is most definitely the time for pro-life folks to gear up because there is a whole lot of work to be done. Not only do we need to be working toward electing pro-life candidates at the state level to ensure we can get abortion banned outright, but we also need to be creating ministries and organizations designed to help women in crisis.
People will not stop having sex and getting pregnant just because Roe was overturned. As a result, there are folks that will make foolish decisions and end up needing help in order to keep and raise their children. We need to be hard at work figuring out ways to come alongside these individuals and help them, demonstrating to them we care about the baby outside of the womb too.
What that looks like, exactly, I’m not sure. But it’s time we figure it out!
