Joe Biden has been slammed for Britain-bashing as he made unsensitive remarks about Britain’s relationship with Ireland.
As the president wrapped up a two-day visit to Israel during his tour of the Middle East, Biden announced a $100 million aid package to Palestine to help fund a new hospital.
During his speech to the Palestinian people, Biden showed his anti-British stance by comparing the conflict between Israel and Palestine to Britain’s relationship with the Irish:
“My background and the background of my family is Irish American, and we have a long history of — not fundamentally unlike the Palestinian people — with Great Britain and their attitude towards Irish-Catholics over the years, for 400 years,” said Biden.
“Palestinians and Israelis deserve equal measure of freedom, security, prosperity and dignity,” he continued.
“And access to healthcare, when you need it, is essential to living a life of dignity.”
His comments riled many Brits who slammed Biden for his very vocal anti-British stance which he has made very clear from the start of his presidency.
In November 2018, when a journalist from the BBC approached Biden for comment after a press conference, the (then) presidential candidate snubbed the reporter, remarking “the BBC? I’m Irish”, before walking away.
Upon his election to the White House, Biden removed a bust of war-time prime minister, Winston Churchill from the Oval Office, opting to replace it with Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. The move sparked ex-Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage to furiously rant on British radio that he would “strongly anti-Brexit and I would even argue he’s anti-Britain”.
Trump, in stark contrast to Biden, is an uncompromising Anglophile with a deep respect and admiration for the British.
The Churchill bust which Biden cancelled sat in Trump’s Oval Office and had been a gift to the White House from the British Embassy.
He made no secret of his support for Britain’s departure from the European Union, encouraging (then) prime minister Theresa May to “walk away” if the EU failed to give her a good divorce deal in 2019.
He went on to say that he thought Boris Johnson would “do a very good job”.
Although there has not been any official comment regarding Biden’s latest dig at Britain, which is arguably the USA’s closest and most longstanding ally, Biden’s latest insensitive snub at the country has riled many political commentators.
Ex-Conservative prime minister, Margaret Thatcher’s former aide Nile Gardiner said the comments were “disgraceful” and “anti-British”.
“A reminder why this clueless US President is no friend of Great Britain,” he added.
Sir Paul Lever, a former British ambassador to Germany said that the president should look closer to home before criticizing ally nations:
“President Biden has compared Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians with Britain’s treatment of Irish Catholics,” he Tweeted.
“He could also have mentioned, but didn’t, his own country’s treatment of black and native Americans.”
The bumbling president even managed to offend the Irish themselves when he made another highly insensitive remark on St Patrick’s Day:
“I may be Irish but I’m not stupid,” he quipped.
I beg to differ.
