Lawmakers in Indiana are set to vote on a bill that would end up banning the vile practice of abortion, with the only exceptions being rape, incest, and saving the life of the mother. If this measure ends up passing without any big changes to the legislation, it will then be sent off to the desk of GOP Gov. Eric Holcomb’s desk to be signed into law.
This is a really big deal, folks. If this ban becomes law, it will make Indiana one of the first states in the country to pass a brand-new restriction on abortion following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
TheBlaze said in its report, “This final vote comes after contentious debate in both houses of the state legislature, divisive votes on amendments, and a visit from Vice President Kamala Harris, who joined thousands of protesters at the state capitol last week in opposition to the bill.”
“We stand with the women of Indiana,” Harris went on to say in comments that were delivered at Indianapolis International Airport not long after her plane landed. “We trust the women of Indiana to make decisions about their own lives without requiring their government to tell them what to do with their bodies.”
The bill, SB1, would slap a big, bad ban on all abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or medical emergencies where the life of the mother is in danger. Now, to be honest, I’m not a believer in exceptions, but that is something that can be fixed as time progresses, so the fact that very few rapes and cases of incest result in pregnancy means that this ban will save thousands upon thousands of lives. And I support that.
Also, there are limits on the exceptions included in the bill. The exceptions for rape and incest only apply during the first 12 weeks for girls who are 15 and younger and the first eight weeks for women over the age of 16.
“The bill narrowly passed in the state Senate last weekend 26-20, with 10 Republicans and all Democrats voting against. Moderate Republicans objected that the bill goes too far by banning abortion after the moment of conception, while some pro-life state senators said the bill was too weak because it held exemptions for rape and incest,” TheBlaze reported.
An amendment that was presented by the House to remove the exceptions, unfortunately, failed on Thursday in a 39-61 vote, with a minority of the GOP joining Democrats in their opposition to it.
Abortion is, in the opinion of the author, the civil rights crisis of our current generation. We have made the first major step in righting that wrong through the overturning of Roe. However, that is just the beginning of the work that needs to be done.
In many states, abortion remains alive and well, unlike the pre-born children murdered by the procedure every day. That means pro-lifers are needed to boldly stand for life by offering to adopt unwanted children and to help provide moral and monetary support for women and young girls who find themselves pregnant and alone.
It is critical that we don’t get lax now. We should be more fired up than ever to engage and see lives saved.
