Well, it looks like candidates backed by former President Donald Trump in both Arizona and Michigan are going to have a very good night ahead of Tuesday evening’s primaries.
According to Just the News, Tudor Dixon, the Trump-supported GOP candidate for governor in the state of Michigan is well ahead of her closest challenger, Kevin Rinke, by a total of 14 points, according to the most recent data from poll averages on Real Clear Politics.
“Republicans are hoping for a strong showing by Dixon, ahead of what could be a general election matchup between the former conservative media personality and incumbent Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, whose strict COVID-19 mandates made her unpopular with a considerable swath of voters. Her approval rating is now at 47%,” the report said.
Trump officially endorsed Dixon just last week. The GOP primary scene in Michigan has been a total mess with several candidates being disqualified from the race.
The states of Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, and Washington are all set to hold primaries Tuesday.
“In Arizona, a proxy war has emerged between Trump and his former vice president, Mike Pence, in the state’s GOP gubernatorial primary to succeed establishment Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who is termed out,” Just the News reported.
Former President Trump has put his support behind former television news reporter Kari Lake. Pence backed real estate developer Karrin Taylor Robson.
“Lake leads Robson by nearly 9 points in the RealClearPolitics.com polling average for that race,” the report said. “In the GOP Senate primary, Trump-backed venture capitalist Blake Masters has a solid, double-digit lead.”
“He has 36% of the likely vote, compared to his closest challenger, businessman Jim Lamon, with roughly 23%, followed by state Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a distant third with roughly 14% of the vote,” Just the News said.
Trump has been rallying against Brnovich due to what he perceives as a lack of support in investigating potential cases of voter fraud that he feels may have played a significant role in costing him the state during the 2020 presidential election.
Another major primary race is the one taking place in Missouri. Sen. Roy Blunt’s seat is open as he is retiring, and the GOP is trying hard to retake control of the upper chamber come November.
“Former Gov. Eric Greitens was the frontrunner until he was hit with domestic-abuse allegations by his ex-wife in mid-June. Greitens has denied the allegations,” the report stated.
Ever since then, state Attorney General Eric Schmidt has taken the lead. Greitens and Rep. Vicky Hartzler are also polling in the top three spots.
What this really says is that Trump still has a lot of influence in the Republican Party, and thus, candidates who are serious about moving into positions where they can win primaries and become candidates for the midterms need to seriously consider courting the former president in order to get his seal of approval.
The fact that Trump is still so powerful, even outside of the White House, no doubt makes the “never Trump” crowd, along with Democrats, incredibly nervous. They should be. The American people are still supportive of Trump and candidates who are like him, and it’s likely those individuals will be the ones leading the red wave, if one comes, this fall.
