A Palestinian man was shot dead by undercover Israeli soldiers early Monday morning after he attempted to interfere with their investigation and tried stabbing them during a search of his home in East Jerusalem, authorities said.
As per authorities, Border Police officials showed up at the home in Kafr’ Aqab, the northernmost East Jerusalem area, to look for weapons he might have illegally possessed. Once he began charging at authorities with a blade, they opened fire on him, bringing him down.
“The family members came out and started confronting the troops when suddenly, the main suspect came out holding a knife and tried to stab our troops who responded by shooting,” according to an authority spokesman.
Authorities treated the supposed aggressor until paramedics arrived on the scene, and he was rushed to a hospital for additional treatment. He later ended up dying, authorities said. Palestinian media unveiled the man to be Muhammad Shaham.
The Kan public telecaster revealed that Shaham’s family is devastated and said that a cop let them know there was a misidentification, and they showed up at the incorrect location. However, authorities are standing firm in their actions and responded by saying there was no slip-up, and they even had a search warrant for that address.
Something seems to be off with the scene, too. If the police did obtain a search warrant and found nothing, what was the reason for the warrant apart from thinking someone at the residence had a weapon of some sort? Also, if they did say they were at the wrong house, why would Shaham charge at them with a blade?
Shaham may have been sitting at home today had he not attempted to stab any of the authorities since the police never found any illegal weapons. Nevertheless, the UN’s Mideast emissary said that he was “deeply disturbed” by the killing and calls for a deeper investigation into the matter.
“My deepest condolences to his family. This requires an immediate, independent, and thorough investigation,” Tor Wennesland said in a tweet.
As troops eventually made their way out of where the killing occurred, Palestinians hurled stones and other items from housetops at the Border Police reinforced vehicles because they believed the authorities had no right to come trotting onto their land. However, the police stayed professional, ignored the aggression shown towards them, and went on their way, leaving just as quickly as they arrived.
Kafr’ Aqab is inside the Israeli-drawn civil limit of Jerusalem, which Israel regards as its unified capital. It is in this manner forbidden to the Palestinian Authority, which is headquartered nearby the city of Ramallah and administers portions of the West Bank. However, the area is on the contrary side to the security border of Israel constructed during the 2000s.
No other Israelis were harmed following the incident, as per authorities.
In other separate invasions across the West Bank, for the time being, troops captured and arrested 19 wanted Palestinians and seized several makeshift illegal weapons, the IDF said Monday morning.
