Remember the “bipartisan” group of congressional leaders known as the “Gang of 8?” Well, it seems they are making a comeback as they have requested access to the various documents that were seized by the FBI in the raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home two weeks ago.
According to Newsmax:
The top-level lawmakers are asking for the Department of Justice and FBI’s assistance in learning more about the Florida search, which reportedly took 9½ hours.
This request comes on the heels of Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner, D-Va., and Vice Chair Marco Rubio, R-Fla., requesting a Senate assessment of the “national security risks” affiliated with Trump’s handling of sensitive documents — including whether then-President Trump declassified all the materials before relocating from the White House to Mar-a-Lago.On Truth Social on Friday, Trump said the records at issue were “all declassified” and placed in “secure storage.”
“They didn’t need to ‘seize’ anything,” Trump wrote. “[Federal officials] could have had it anytime they wanted without playing politics and breaking into Mar-a-Lago.”
The “Gang of 8” members are Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.; House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.; Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; and Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, along with Warner and Rubio.
A report from Politico said that aides on Capitol Hill have been extremely frustrated concerning the lack of information that has been provided by the now notorious, now infamous, Attorney General Merrick Garland and his minion, FBI Director Christopher Wray.
Newsmax stated in a report released last Friday that FBI agents took a total of 11 sets of classified documents, with some being marked “top secret.” The DOJ stated that prosecutors met the guidelines for probable cause to believe that Trump may have been in violation of the Espionage Act.
Yeah, this is just the cover story for what really happened. This is all smelling a whole lot like a political attack against Trump. What was the goal of such an assault on a former sitting president? Making it so he cannot run for office again in 2024.
According to the report, while being a studio guest last Thursday during an episode of “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” Trump’s attorney Alina Habba spoke with Newsmax and said that the Mar-a-Lago affidavit seemed to imply the potential guilt of the former president on three different fronts, those being the destruction of documents, concealment, and espionage.
Habba responded to this by stating that if the DOJ is claiming concealment, “you wouldn’t have allowed federal agents into Mar-a-Lago.”
“If the DOJ cites espionage, Habba said the Trump attorneys wouldn’t have been transparent about federal officials viewing the documents in June. And if the DOJ argues destruction, Habba says Trump’s people wouldn’t have responded positively to the feds’ request of putting a padlock on the presidential documents,” Newsmax reported.
“What people don’t understand: Presidents have different kinds of privileges — executive privileges,” Habba remarked, going on to add that Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama both exercised similar declassification privileges with various documents after they left office in 2009 and 2017, respectively.
I think we all have a good idea of what this was all about. At this point, the focus should be on fighting back against this nonsense. If Trump doesn’t take legal action, which it seems he is planning to do, it would mean allowing the FBI to get away with a major political attack against someone the federal government views as an opponent of the current president.
That would have serious ramifications for every American. If you aren’t on board with the program, you could be their next target.
