The world learned the existence of MacKenzie Scott in 2019 when she and her billionaire then-husband Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos filed for divorce. But the proceedings went relatively smoothly, not a drawn-out courtroom fight over several years, with MacKenzie receiving $36 billion in the settlement, amounting to a four percent cut of the company.
With that money MacKenzie Scott has morphed into a philanthropist, donating to many charities, including leftist ones, and snagging a second husband. Unlike her first husband, Dan Jewett is not a business mogul but a science teacher, having taught at the school that Scott’s children attend. However, Jewett now has something in common with Jeff Bezos in that Scott has filed for divorce, asking to end her second marriage that lasted only 18 months. Scott filed the petition to dissolve her marriage filed in King County, Washington, earlier this week, and asks “that the couple’s property be divided as laid out in a separation contract.”
In order to determine where Scott ranks among the Richie Riches of the world, we look to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, which estimates that her net worth is $28.9 billion, putting her at 39 on the list, as reported by Breitbart. The world learned of her marriage to Jewett via philanthropy website the Giving Pledge, when Jewett posted a letter on Scott’s page, speaking of his years as a teacher to become co-philanthropist with Scott:
“And now, in a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know — and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others.”
If you go to the Giving Pledge to read the letter you will no longer find it, as it has ostensibly been removed given the divorce filing, along with Jewett’s name and photo. Instead, you see a photo of a smiling Scott, and a quote to the right of her photo: “There are lots of resources each of us can pull from our safes to share with others. And something greater rises up every time we give.”
Earlier this year, Scott donated $275 million to Planned Parenthood, the largest single-person donation in the organization’s history. She also donated $15 million to the Health Forward Foundation and $20 million to the Episcopal Health Foundation. And in early September this year, Scott donated two Beverly Hills houses worth $55 million combined to the California Community Foundation, which has the murky mission of “[leading] positive systemic change that strengthens Los Angeles communities.”
In a blog post last year, Scott wrote of her philosophy in giving away vast amounts of her money, saying that she comprises part of a community of ultra-wealthy people who want to redistribute their wealth to more people:
“…we are all attempting to give away a fortune that was enabled by systems in need of change. In this effort, we are governed by a humbling belief that it would be better if disproportionate wealth were not concentrated in a small number of hands, and that the solutions are best designed and implemented by others. Though we still have a lot to learn about how to act on these beliefs without contradicting and subverting them, we can begin by acknowledging that people working to build power from within communities are the agents of change.”
No word yet on how hard the divorce will hit Scott, or how much Jewett is set to receive from his rich soon-to-be ex-wife.
