President Biden was criticized by John Avlon, CNN’s senior political analyst, for calling the Republican Party “semi-fascist.” This criticism comes as CNN executives allegedly pressure the network’s hosts to concentrate on unbiased news reporting. “The term semi-fascist is not helpful,” Avlon said on CNN’s “New Day.” “It’s not befitting the office of president.”
“You can absolutely call out the dangers to our democracy, but it makes obviously perfect sense for someone like Sen. Hassan, because look, in New Hampshire, more than 40% of registered voters are independent,” Avlon noted. “Another 30-and-change are Republicans. Democrats are the third category among registered voters, so she needs to be able to reach out and that language doesn’t help her do that.”
Avlon claimed that Biden’s controversial comments made last week at a gathering for Democratic donors were “not helpful” for Democrats who were having trouble winning over swing voters. One of those objecting to Biden’s depiction of the political scene was Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH), who is running for re-election in the Granite State.
Republican strategist Alice Stewart, a fellow panelist on CNN, claimed that Avlon was “being kind” in his assessment of Biden’s remarks, said NY Post. “The takeaway from Republicans is that the President of the United States, who campaigned on, won on, and was sworn in on a message of unity, lowering the temperature and bringing this country together, just called half of the country fascist,” Stewart said.
During a speech at a Democratic fundraising event in Maryland, Biden attacked Republicans and urged attendees “to vote to literally save democracy once again” in the forthcoming 2022 midterm elections. “What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy,” Biden said to donors. “It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the — I’m going to say something, it’s like semi-fascism.”
Later on in the meeting, Biden stated that while he values “conservative Republicans,” he does not respect “these MAGA Republicans.” In response to Biden’s remarks, Hassan claimed that the president had “painted with way too broad a brush” in using the word, said NY Post.
The network is undergoing a makeover under the leadership of new CNN President Chris Licht and David Zaslav, WarnerBros. Discovery CEO. During the Trump presidency, the network’s characters frequently adopted a hostile tone toward Republicans.
John Malone, a significant shareholder in WarnerBros. Discovery recently expressed his desire for CNN to be “more centrist,” despite his denial of any involvement in the decision to fire liberal anchor Brian Stelter. According to recent reports, Licht planned to “blow up” the morning show “New Day” because of its poor ratings. Licht previously stated that CNN wants to “reimagine” its morning programming during an upfront presentation in May, but he gave no further details.
