There is no room for racism in our schools. Yes, that means racism against white kids too. No child should feel marginalized because of factors that they cannot control. Recently a white Utah elementary school teacher gained notoriety for a viral video where she openly bragged and admitted that she purposely excluded representing white kids in her class. She was subsequently suspended, but the cowardly school district just reinstated her after a halfhearted, forced apology. Imagine if it had been a white teacher talking about excluding black kids!
“For the first time in my life, I’m going to be teaching at a majority white school, and I’m kind of interested to see how students and parents react to my classroom — because it’s built for non-white students,” the teacher said in a video posted to social media.
The teacher, who has not been identified, said that she made sure “no white kids” are “represented” in her classroom materials.

Why is it necessary to make a point to exclude white kids? How about just being inclusive of everyone and building your classroom in the best possible way to enable you to teach your lesson plans? Further, where was school administration, and why wasn’t this teacher vetted more closely for her racist views before being hired?
“If you look around and interact with some of the materials I have, you’ll notice that there’s, like, no white kids represented,” she said. “Same with my coloring pages, I have big stack of coloring pages that students can use, and not a single one with a person on it depicts a white person.”
“And the only Disney princesses I have are Mulan and Moana,”
This is a disgusting example of racism against white people that would not be tolerated against any other race. Elementary school kids aren’t black, white, Hispanic, and Asian. they are KIDS. They don’t even see themselves as any different until adults like this teacher point it out, planting the seeds for division and mistrust. The adults must do better and allowing her to continue teaching kids is unacceptable.
After a one-month investigation, school district officials said they had no evidence to confirm “any policy or legal violations” regarding the commentary made in the teacher’s social media post.
The school district, however, noted that it reprimanded the teacher for her behavior.
“We have disciplined the employee as appropriate and consistent with the findings of the investigation,” Granite School District representatives said.
Whether there were legal, or policy violations should not matter. The optics and intention of the situation should have warranted immediate termination, not a month-long paid vacation. How are the parents of white children supposed to trust that this teacher has anything but her own agenda in mind, no less trust her to educate their white kids? Obviously, she has a disdain for her own race and saw it appropriate to exclude any representation, as if white kids don’t matter. What kind of message does that send?
“I sincerely regret the disruption brought to the school, faculty, community, families and above all, my students,” the teacher said in a statement.
I built my classroom for all learners and to be welcoming of all families. I have and will continue to ensure that every student feels welcome and represented in my classroom, and I strive to provide an inclusive environment and to ensure the safety and comfort of all my students.
Meaningless and hollow words from a racist teacher that is apologizing only because she HAD to. Every white parent should petition the school and refuse to allow their children in that classroom until she is removed and terminated. Anything less is an admission by the school district that white kids just aren’t as important as kids of color, and that is terribly wrong.
