Being a police officer is a tough, thankless job in this day and age. Much of the difficulty these brave individuals face has come as a result of the leftists in the media, Congress, and the culture pushing a false narrative that law enforcement as an institution is inherently racist and oppressive. Cops, according to the left, target young black men and women with the intent to kill them. It sounds ridiculous, but that’s what a lot of folks believe.
What’s unfortunate is this false narrative comes with heavy, heavy consequences. We’ve witnessed a spike in cop killing over the last few years, especially in light of the death of George Floyd and the “defund the police” movement that came about as a result of that situation.
One such incident happened on Thursday evening in Georgia.
According to The Daily Wire, two Georgia deputies who were serving a warrant were “ambushed” according to local law enforcement authorities. The warrant was for a failure to appear in court over a charge of theft by deception in Cobb County, which is a decently populated county located in the northwest of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The two individuals suspected of killing the officers have been taken into custody, however, at the time of this writing, their names have not been released to the public.
“What I can tell you in this moment is this — in plain terms it is simple, my two deputies were ambushed this evening and killed,” Sheriff Craig D. Owens went on to say about the tragic incident. “The two suspects we believe are the perpetrators of this crime are currently in custody and are being held at the Cobb County Police Department for questioning.”
The Daily Wire also reported, “The deceased deputies, who also were not named, had both been with the department for over five years. Owens said he wanted to make sure family notifications were finished before releasing the deputies’ names.”
According to local law enforcement, both of the deputies had showed up to deliver the warrants and were talking with one of the individuals who was involved in the killing, when gunshots popped off from inside the home and a vehicle. After the deputies were wounded, they were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital.
One of the officers who was shot was struck by a bullet in the head. The other, who died while being driven to the hospital, succumbed to a wound in the pelvic region.
And that wasn’t the end of the night’s drama either. Not long after both deputies died from their wounds, a standoff went down between police and the suspects. Both SWAT and FAST teams showed up on the scene. The suspects were finally taken into custody early on Friday morning at 12:15 a.m.
During a press conference, Owens went on to make remarks concerning the officers who died, saying they served with “dignity and honor.”
“It is a night of heartache for two families from the Cobb sheriff’s office, two wives who have lost their amazing husbands,” the sheriff remarked. “These two deputies served Cobb County with dignity and honor.”
Owens then asked that folks be praying for the families of the officers, saying that “our hearts are broken here in Cobb County.”
A statement on the situation was also put out by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
“Marty, the girls, & I were deeply saddened to learn of the killing of these two deputies. Men & women like them bravely serve our communities every day, & we owe them a great debt of gratitude,” the governor stated. “Please join us in praying for their families & fellow law enforcement officers.”
