With the GOP now firmly in control of House of Representatives, Congressman Chip Roy of Texas has reintroduced a bill on Thursday that is designed to defund the World Health Organization, and raised concerns about the influence China seems to have over the group. This is something that most definitely needs to happen. Like yesterday.
The legislation is called “No Taxpayer Funding for the World Health Organization Act,” seeks to crack down on the contributions made to WHO that have gone up steadily to hundreds of millions of dollars every year, which has made the U.S. one of the agency’s top donors.
“Funneling millions of taxpayer dollars to the corrupt World Health Organization that serves the Chinese Communist Party is a slap in the face to hardworking American families struggling under record high inflation, and to all those whose lives and livelihoods were ruined and destroyed by the COVID pandemic,” Roy said in a statement given to The Daily Wire.
The bill itself puts two types of contributions made to the WHO in its sights, saying, “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, effective on the date of the enactment of this Act, the United States may not provide any assessed or voluntary contributions to the World Health Organization.”
The Daily Wire report says, “Assessed contributions are ‘required dues a government agrees to pay when it becomes a member,’ while voluntary contributions ‘fluctuate annually and are often earmarked for specific projects,’ according to the Congressional Research Service.”
Rep. Roy, who is a huge believer in the idea of Congress using the “power of the purse” to effect change, has leveled serious accusations at the WHO of “siding with the communists in China,” over concerns that the agency might have aided Beijing in the cover up of the origins of the coronavirus. Which we still have yet to receive concrete answers about. We all deserve to know how this thing got started and whether or not it was a goof up or some sort intentional leak.
“Then-President Donald Trump announced in the spring of 2020 that he intended to halt funding to the WHO while his administration reviewed its handling of COVID. He accused the group of ‘severely mismanaging and covering up’ the threat,” the Daily Wire said.
The declaration from the former president caused much outrage from the perpetually offended and ticked off Democrats who condemned his statement.
“President Trump must stop his petty, counterproductive political games,” Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY),who was chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee at the time, went on to state. “The coronavirus cannot just be defeated here in the United States, it has to be defeated in every conceivable location throughout the world.”
The new bill from Chip has a much better chance of succeeding now that Republicans run the House, but to be honest, it faces almost insurmountable odds of getting passed in the Senate, which is still under control of the Democrats.
“The WHO not only regularly promotes abortion and radical gender ideology but also praised China for their ‘leadership’ at the beginning of COVID-19 and has done nothing to hold the CCP accountable for the spread of COVID-19,” Roy commented in his statement delivered to The Daily Wire. “It is far past time for Congress to use its power of the purse to cut off US funding to this corrupt international body just like the Trump Administration did.”
