A long standing tradition here in the United States is for politicians to place their right hand on a Bible as they are being sworn-into office. But, as with most things that come from a well established tradition, there are always a few individuals who want to buck the system and make waves. One such individual is Rep.-elect Robert Garcia.
According to the Conservative Brief, Garcia is described by his office as being the “first immigrant and LGBTQ mayor” in the history of the city of Long Beach, California, and is also the first person to describe himself this way as he enters Congress.
And he has decided he’ll not be using a Bible when he is being sworn in. Is that really a surprise given the fact he’s a homosexual? Homosexuality is an act the Scriptures condemn as sinful, and seeing as it’s a lifestyle Garcia is keen on participating in, it makes sense he wouldn’t put his hand on the Good Book.
“Will be proudly sworn-in to Congress on the U.S. Constitution. Underneath the Constitution will be 3 items that mean a lot to me personally. A photo of my parents who I lost to covid, my citizenship certificate & an original Superman #1 from the @librarycongress,” he stated on Twitter.

So the Constitution I get. The photo of his parents I also get. The citizenship certificate? Makes total sense. The picture of Superman though? Really? What does that have to do with anything? Someone make it make sense.
A report from KTLA said, “Garcia will serve as the representative for California’s 42nd Congressional District. Garcia immigrated to the U.S. from Peru at the age of 5 and has said that becoming a citizen was not only his proudest moment but also the reason he went into public service. Upon his election as mayor of Long Beach in 2014, Garcia became the first immigrant and LGBTQ mayor in the city’s history. He will also be the first LGBTQ immigrant to serve in Congress, according to his office.”
Garcia actually should have been sworn in on January 3, but the House is still in the process of electing a Speaker — as of this writing — so none of the new class of representatives can be sworn in until one is voted into the position.
Speaking of that, former President Donald Trump put out a message on Wednesday urging the GOP to vote in favor of making GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy Speaker of the House after the new Congress failed to pick its new leader during the first day it had control of the chamber.
“Some really good conversations took place last night, and it’s now time for all of our GREAT Republican House Members to VOTE FOR KEVIN, CLOSE THE DEAL, TAKE THE VICTORY, & WATCH CRAZY NANCY PELOSI FLY BACK HOME TO A VERY BROKEN CALIFORNIA, THE ONLY SPEAKER IN U.S. HISTORY TO HAVE LOST THE ’HOUSE’ TWICE!,” the former president remarked in a post on his Truth Social account.
“REPUBLICANS, DO NOT TURN A GREAT TRIUMPH INTO A GIANT & EMBARRASSING DEFEAT. IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE, YOU DESERVE IT. Kevin McCarthy will do a good job, and maybe even a GREAT JOB – JUST WATCH!” Trump continued.
In another post published on Truth Social, the former president stated, “TAKE THE VICTORY AND RUN!!!”
