The old saying says “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater,” but for one migrant woman, she threw the baby out and kept the bath water.
Lucia Garcia, 21, has been arrested for leaving her newborn baby in a NYC hospital trash can, claiming that she didn’t know she was pregnant, and thought it was just blood.
Now, Garcia wants her baby back. Check this out.
A mom from Mexico who was arrested after leaving her newborn boy in a bathroom trash can at a city hospital swears she didn’t know she was pregnant — and hadn’t realized she had thrown her baby away.
“I thought it was just blood,” Lucia Garcia, 21, told The Post in Spanish from her Staten Island home on Saturday.
“I didn’t know I put my baby in the trash until the nurse told me later.”
We read stories like this occasionally, where someone doesn’t know they are full-term pregnant. It is unclear how one wouldn’t be tipped off by the weight gain, the kicking, and the lack of a menstrual cycle for a full nine months, but apparently it still happens.

Thankfully hospital staff heard the baby cry from the trash and rescued the trash baby before it was too late.
A police officer working security and members of the cleaning staff heard the baby’s cries, and found the newborn boy in the garbage can.
“I was in handcuffs in my bed at the hospital,” Garcia said, adding there was a police officer sitting in a chair in the corner of her room.
She was charged with two counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of acting in a manner injurious to a child, online records show.
The woman’s father, Ambrosio Garcia, 41 also insisted that his daughter claimed she wasn’t pregnant. He said he took her to the hospital because she wasn’t feeling well. It probably had something to do with he full term child she was about to deliver.
The young mother now wants custody of the child, and she wants to contact the father and hold him financially responsible. I can’t imagine a scenario where this baby would be given back, but it’s New York City, so anything is likely. She said from her hospital room
“I don’t know when I’m going to get him back,” she said.
“I want him back. I want to take care of him. I just want my baby back.”
The police have seized her phone, making it impossible to contact the biological father.
“How am I going to tell him when I don’t have any way to contact him?” she asked.
But her father plans to find the baby’s dad, she said.
“He is going to have to pay for all of this,” she said of the young man.
The dad apparently lives in Manhattan and met the girl on Facebook. She says he visited the room she shares with her father several times. Apparently she is warming up to the prospect of being a mother.
Garcia said she wasn’t sure about having a baby at first but had since changed her mind.
“At first, I didn’t know if I was ready to be a mom,” she said.
“I thought I had made an error — but now I just want him here with me.”
I’m afraid that would have to be a hard pass, unlike labor and delivery, apparently. Call me old fashioned, but if you put your baby in a trash can, you fail to have a baby moving forward. Like I said, it’s New York so she will probably get the child and all of the social services she needs moving forward.
