The president of Uganda has signed a brand new piece of legislation into law that includes the death penalty for what it calls “aggravated homosexuality,” according to a new report published by the Associated Press. And yet, for some reason, the radical left in our country thinks American Christians and conservatives are crazy bigots who wish harm on the LGBTQ community? Really? Apparently, they are blissfully unaware of how gay people are treated in other places around the world.
“The bill signed by President Yoweri Museveni doesn’t criminalize LBGTQ identification, but the AP said it does prescribe the death penalty for ‘aggravated homosexuality,’ which the outlet said is defined as sexual relations involving HIV-positive people as well as with minors and other vulnerable individuals,” TheBlaze reported.
Along with that, a person who is suspected of committing “attempted aggravated homosexuality,” could face a prison term of up to 14 years.
While plenty of individuals all over the world have come out against the new law, there are a lot of folks in the country that are in favor of it.
Anita Among, Parliamentary Speaker, released a statement where she said that Uganda’s president, “answered the cries of our people” by making the bill official law.
“With a lot of humility, I thank my colleagues the Members of Parliament for withstanding all the pressure from bullies and doomsday conspiracy theorists in the interest of our country,” the statement went on to say, according to the news publication.
“LGBTQ rights campaigners say the new legislation is unnecessary in a country where homosexuality has long been illegal under a colonial-era law criminalizing sexual activity ‘against the order of nature.’ The punishment for that offense is life imprisonment,” the AP added in its report. “The U.S. has warned of economic consequences over legislation described by Amnesty International as ‘draconian and overly broad.'”
When it comes to this particular issue, I don’t think the United States has any sort of right to tell the people of Uganda what they can and cannot legislate. They are their own country. We need to respect their sovereignty, the same way we would expect other nations around the world to respect ours. It’s the Golden Rule on an international scale.
” The U.N. Human Rights Office said Monday it was ‘appalled that the draconian and discriminatory anti-gay bill is now law,’ describing the legislation as ‘a recipe for systematic violations of the rights’ of LGBTQ people and others,” the report from the Associated Press said.
The news outlet then stated that there has been a growth of “anti-gay” sentiment in the country after news came out that alleged acts of sodomy were happening in boarding schools, including a rather prestigious and well known institution for young men where a parent accused a teacher of abusing her child.
Out of 54 countries in Africa, homosexuality is criminalized in over thirty of them, with some of those nations seeing it as something that has spread from other countries around the world rather than a legitimate sexual orientation.
