Woody Harrelson is something of a unicorn politically. he is neither a Democrat nor a Republican, though he shares viewpoints from both sides. His unique thought process gives him insight into exactly how conservatives feel about far-left politics and how leftists feel about the right. The difference is he has a platform and isn’t afraid of being canceled, so he speaks his mind, and we are lucky enough to hear it.
Harrelson did, however, grow up a Republican. In fact, he canvassed for the GOP when he was much younger. Woody is about to star in the miniseries called White House Plumbers, which chronicles the Watergate scandal, and he had some interesting things to say to Esquire about his political views, and in particular, far-leftism.
Harrelson said to Esquire, via Breitbart:
“I understand it. And there’s still a fear of communism. We still loathe Russia. There’s still all the concern about the liberal agenda. I get how this mentality develops. I’m really, basically, a little bit of both.”
“There are things that the liberals do that I think, What fucking idiots. And then there’s also conservative ideology that strikes me as odd. I consider myself, really, an anarchist,”
Actor Woody Harrelson may not be a conservative, but he sure understands what conservatives feel sometimes about extreme leftism. Of course, Harrelson is too smart to really be an anarchist, so he went on to clarify that he is more of a Libertarian than a Democrat or Republican, and he explained how he came to that viewpoint:
“I never see government work. It always seems to be working for the people who got you there. It’s businessmen working for bigger businessmen,” he said. “It’s not businessmen working for their constituents. I think government just usually sucks…am I wrong? Even the social programs, they do it reluctantly, and they’re just always trying to gobble back what they can from the social programs.”
He is spot on with his assessment, especially in terms of our current administration. So, why hasn’t Harrelson, as one of the rare Hollywood celebrities willing to call out the nonsense from both sides, been canceled? He is basically uncancelable because he doesn’t care. You can only be canceled if you care. It also doesn’t hurt that he is universally loved and has been a mainstay in movies and on television since his breakout role as Woody on “Cheers.”
If Woody were going to be dinged by cancel culture, it would have been after his controversial Saturday Night Live monologue when he ripped on lockdowns and big pharma. There was blowback, but Harrelson didn’t care. He had this to say about his SNL criticism:
“Well, people told me it was, shall we say, ‘trending.’ No, I don’t look at that shit,” he said. “I feel like, ‘I said it on SNL.’ I don’t need to go further with it [pause]…other than to say — well, no, I won’t. Never mind. That’s enough… But it don’t change my life one bit. Not one bit, if the mainstream media wants to have a go at you, right? My life is still wonderful.”
Woody Harrelson is refreshingly honest and hugely talented, all without acting like he is morally superior to anyone else. Plus, he isn’t afraid to call b.s. when he sees it. We need more celebrities willing to point out the absurdities of today’s culture as Harrelson does.
