In a world where there are miscreants involved in rioting, looting, and other forms of violent crime being hailed as heroes for doing it all in the name of social justice, it’s a total breath of fresh air to encounter a true act of heroism, one that requires the individual to actually risk their safety, even their life, for the sake of others. It’s unfortunately not as common as it once was in this country, but thankfully, despite the lack of coverage it tends to garner from the mainstream media, these kind of things do happen.
A great example of this comes from the state of Nebraska, where, according to the Daily Caller, a delivery driver for Fed Ex is being hailed as a hero after he had an encounter with a rattlesnake on the front porch of a home he was delivering a package to in the early part of the month. Fortunately, the driver was able to kill the snake before it could harm anyone.
Christie Jones, the homeowner where the package was delivered, rewarded Matt Govier by nominating him for “FedEx employee of the year,” after he took action to kill the rattlesnake slinking around in the corner of Jones’ front porch. The incident was captured on Jones’ doorbell camera.
The whole thing transpired just moments after Jones’ 12-year-old daughter left the house. The footage shows a massive 36-inch rattlesnake making its way onto the front step. Around two minutes pass before Govier arrives at the house to make his delivery, where he was promptly greeted by the chilling sound of the animal’s rattle after leaving the package.
“And there he was,” Govier said during an interview with NTV News concerning the snake, which was all curled up in the corner of the porch close to the front door.
Here’s more from the report:
Seemingly not wanting to leave the homeowners with an unpleasant and potentially deadly surprise, Govier took it upon himself to deal with the situation. “I knew they had a garage there and I figured they probably had some tools that I could go grab,” Govier told the outlet.
Armed with a rake and shovel, Govier dispatched the snake and removed it from the front porch, but not before snapping a picture of the deadly reptile and sending it to Jones. “I hope you didn’t have a pet rattlesnake at your front door because I killed him,” he wrote, according to a screenshot of their message exchange. “Sorry about the blood,” he added.
Hardly upset by Govier’s initiative, Jones told NTV she was grateful he’d taken it upon himself to kill the snake rather than just inform her it was lurking in the corner. “I don’t know that I would [have been able] to exit my front door,” Jones said.
Instead of leaving the snake’s corpse on the lawn, Govier picked it up, informing NTV News he had a couple of garbage bags stowed away in his vehicle and stuffed it in those, saying he’d figure out what to do with it later. Jones, who was absolutely thrilled with the actions the driver took, insisted he receive a raise for going far beyond his job description, however, Govier waved off the praise and simply told the woman, “You’re welcome.”
