The United States State Department has come out and stated they believe that China, a communist nation, is currently spending billions of dollars every single year on a global disinformation campaign in order to help promote its national interests. The Global Engagement Center issued a report on Thursday that found Beijing is employing the use of troll armies online — not actual trolls, people. I know. I too was bummed — filing lawsuits against those who criticize them, foreign investments, and content-sharing agreements to help push forward its agenda.
“When you look at the pieces of the puzzle and put it together, you see a breathtaking ambition on the part of the PRC [People’s Republic of China] to seek information dominance in key regions of the world,” James Rubin, the GEC’s special envoy and coordinator, went on to say.
“According to the report, China has used its information apparatus to reinforce Russia’s narrative on the war in Ukraine, specifically claims of instigation by NATO. Russia appears to have responded by promoting Chinese claims that it is the rightful owner of Taiwan. But the propaganda machine has yielded “mixed results” globally. Meta, for example, said last month it took down thousands of accounts on Facebook and Instagram linked to the Chinese government,” the report stated.
“This is the biggest single takedown of a single network we have ever conducted,” Ben Nimmo, the head honcho of Meta’s security team, said in a conversation with The New York Times. “When you put it together with all the activity we took down across the internet, we concluded it is the largest covert campaign that we know of today.”
A few other targets provided some success, including a probe into some of China’s investments in satellite networks and the intimidation of international companies that the communist government perceives as a threat to its own nation and agenda.
The report discovered that officials in China back in 2021 agreed to pay a handsome sum of cash to a newspaper in an East African country to publish articles that were favorable to Beijing. Of course, they were told they would have to hide the sponsorship as part of the deal. Can’t have the rest of the world finding out how just deep the corruption in China goes, right?
China has been involved in a number of shady deals. Just look at the business it did with President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, for example. These Chinese businessmen were willing to pay out obscene amounts of money to be granted the ear of then-Vice President Biden so they could convince him to uphold policies that would be favorable toward China.
And what’s worse, lots of evidence exists to establish that connection was made and that our own vice president at the time was deeply involved in the scheme. This, of course, compromised our national security, but hey, all that matters to Crazy Uncle Joe is money and power. Well, mostly money.
Let’s hope some solid measures are taken to combat the insanity in this country concerning our relationship with China.
