Actress Annette Bening has issued a rather spicy response to politicians who are working to protect minors who identify as transgender from receiving life-altering surgeries to aid in their transition to the opposite sex. Listen, if you think minors are too immature to decide whether or not to smoke, join the military, drive a car, or drink, why is it such a stretch to think they are not developed mentally enough to decide if they should cut off their genitals and breasts? I mean, all of that seems fairly reasonable to most people. Why does Bening not understand this?
“You do not want to make this momma mad,” the Academy Award winning actress stated while delivering an address at GLSEN’s Rise Up LA benefit which helps provide aid for programs that support LGBT grade school students. Bening received an award during the event.
It’s really not surprising that Bening is taking this very pro-transgender stance. She and her husband, Warren Beatty, have an adult child, Stephen Ira, who identifies as transgender. Because having a kid who goes off the rails is suddenly a valid excuse to forego reality, truth, and scientific fact, apparently.
“Most of my career, I’ve been a pretty private person … but over the last several years, I’ve changed my mind,” Bening went on to say during the speech, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. “I have felt the responsibility to speak out and to speak up as transphobia has invaded our government at the local, state and federal levels. It is hurtful. It is shameful. And it is being used as a tool by the far right to rally their base and turn out the vote.”
You can love your child unconditionally without supporting their lifestyle choices and the insanity they choose to indulge in, but that’s something most parents of children who struggle with this kind of mental illness don’t understand.
Here’s more from the Daily Wire:
The “American Beauty” star went on to recount the story of a “friend” who recently became a “political refugee within our own country” when she felt compelled to move out of Texas due to legislation meant to protect minors from permanently mutilating their bodies.
“Imagine being brought up on criminal charges or reported to child protective services because you are just trying to do what is best for your child,” Bening said. “It got to the point where my friend gave her young trans child a burner phone and an explicit set of instructions to follow in case child protective services came to her school to question her, which they have been allowed to do without the parents present.”
“Think about that for a moment. The government should not be getting in between parents and children when it comes to private matters like this,” the activist actress added.
“There is one thing I have always known,” Bening said as she finished her address. “Love and compassion have to lead the way. Let it lead the way towards radical understanding and acceptance, let it lead the way toward queer joy and celebration, and let it lead us all the way to the ballot box.”
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed a piece of legislation into law over the summer that bans doctors from being able to perform sex-change procedures on minors. This makes the Lone Star State the 20th in the Union to take such action, proving that not everyone in this country has lost their dang minds.
