As blues master B.B. King used to say, the thrill is gone, baby.
It seems the majority of moviegoers have officially contracted superhero movie fatigue as the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the female led “The Marvels” raked in the lowest box office numbers during an opening weekend in the franchise’s history, only pulling in a measly $47 million. Ouch. Remember when anything Marvel Studios put out basically printed money for Disney? Those days are long, long gone. Nothing the company has put out recently has been a success.
There are, of course, to huge factors that have led to this. The first one is superhero fatigue. People are just plain sick and tired of comic book adaptations and want to see something different at the theater. Secondly, it’s due to Disney and Marvel Studios stuffing wokeness in their projects and causing them to become progressive sermons rather than well doubt genre stories.
Here are additional details from the Daily Wire:
“The Marvels” was a huge disappointment in comparison to some of Marvel’s top-performing films, including “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), which made $257 million at the opening, and the MCU’s crowning jewel “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), which had a staggering $357 million debut.
This news comes after prediction websites reduced expectations from $75-$80 million to $60-$65 million. In the end, the 33rd MCU film didn’t even hit those reduced projections. Before “The Marvels,” the lowest opening for a Marvel movie was “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), which brought in $55.4 million, not adjusted for inflation.
Poor performance is partly blamed on the actors strike, which ended just before the film’s premiere on Friday. That meant the film couldn’t be promoted the same way as others that came before it.
Or, and just hear me out, folks don’t care about these sort of movies anymore. That’s my take on it and I’m sticking to it. The problem with the MCU is that it’s all connected. That was actually what drove its success in the beginning, however, the problem now is there is so much material to consume in order to understand what’s going on in the overall narrative that people are just simply getting overwhelmed and dropping the whole thing.
As of now, the Rotten Tomatoes score the film is at 62 percent with critics and 84 percent with audiences. A lot of individuals who have seen the movie have referred to it as standard comic book movie fare. Which is to say, it’s not bad, but not really all that good either. Again, superhero fatigue is real, but that’s not all that’s happening here. Preaching progressive values and stuffing agenda in every project is also wearing people’s nerves thin.
And yet, the hardcore left will likely not stop trying to convert everyone to their way of thinking, rather than accepting the fact we need people with all kinds of different perspectives in order to make things work in this country. Ironic that liberals cry over diversity all the time, yet when it comes to having diversity of thought, they suddenly change their tune.
