According to a brand spanking new report from Breitbart News, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is planning to announce the suspension of his GOP presidential campaign during a town hall event held in New Hampshire Wednesday evening. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the guy was even running in the first place. Does anyone actually like him or his policies? I mean, talk about a wishy-washy establishment kind of guy, geesh. We had plenty of better choices for the GOP nominee, that much is for sure.
Here’s more from the report:
That’s according to a person with direct knowledge of the former New Jersey governor’s plans who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to disclose private discussions. Christie has been under intense pressure to exit the Republican presidential primary race as critics of Donald Trump work to unify behind a viable alternative to the former president.
Well, when it comes to backing an alternative to Trump, the Republican Party will want to avoid backing former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who is, by and large, considered the establishment candidate. Voters are sick and tired of establishment politicians, which should be obvious after not only having one term of Trump, but the fact that MAGA candidates, who are diehard conservatives that tend to stand on their principles, have been elected to a lot of seats in the House and Senate.
So, if they are really going to back someone else in the days before the Iowa caucuses, they better back someone similar to Trump. That person would be DeSantis. I highly doubt they’ll do that though, because the establishment will back the person that will work toward preserving their positions.
Christie is scheduled to host a town hall meeting in Windham at 5 p.m., hours before two of his rivals, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, meet for the fifth GOP presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle. It is the only debate that Christie did not qualify for.
The news comes as a surprise, given that Christie had staked the success of his campaign on New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary, which is less than two weeks away. He had insisted as recently as Tuesday night that he had no plans to leave the race, rebuffing growing calls for him to step aside as he continued to cast himself as the only candidate willing to directly take on the former president.
“I would be happy to get out of the way for someone who is actually running against Donald Trump,” he stated during a town hall in Rochester, New Hampshire, going on to say that none of his competitors had stepped up.
“I’m famous enough. … I’ve got plenty of titles. … The only reason to do this is to win,” he continued. “So I’d be happy to get out of the way for somebody if they actually were going against Donald Trump.”
However, the polls have not exactly been kind to Christie. While recent results might have had him hitting double digits in New Hampshire, Haley is gaining on him fast.
A CNN/UNH pollconducted in the state this week found Trump’s lead down to the single digits, with 4 in 10 likely Republican primary voters choosing Trump and about one-third now choosing Haley.
In truth, it was only a matter of time before he bowed out as Christie stood no chance of winning from the very beginning.
