Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has no mercy in his heart for Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, demanding that she immediately be denaturalized as a U.S. citizen and shipped back to Somalia after she delivered a speech stating her main priority as a congresswoman is looking out for Somali interests. Yeah, that’s not what the Constitution says, lady. Has this woman even read our founding document, the one that enables her current position to exist in the first place?
Of course, Omar has been slammed and ripped by critics, including Republicans in Congress, over this whole debacle after a video of the speech, which was delivered on Jan. 27 hit the internet and went viral. She was addressing Somalian leaders in her home state of Minnesota at the time she made the comments.

Omar was speaking in Somali in her speech and did not mention her support for the U.S. and instead said she was “Somalian first, Muslim second” and that she was “here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system,” according to a translation of her speech shared on Twitter by Ambassador Rhoda J. Elmi, the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland.
Omar also reportedly said: “While I am in Congress, no one will take Somalia’s sea. The United States will not back others to rob us. So, do not lose sleep over that,” Newsweek reported.
“Expel from Congress, denaturalize and deport!” DeSantis stated in his reply to her address.
Other lawmakers such as Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer have gone after Omar over the remarks.
“Ilhan Omar’s appalling, Somalia-first comments are a slap in the face to the Minnesotans she was elected to serve and a direct violation of her oath of office. She should resign in disgrace,” Emmer said in a post that was published on X.
What excuse has Omar come up with to try and justify her comments? How about blaming the translation of the subtitles? Yes, that’s the path she took in trying to defend herself from the criticism she was rightly receiving. There’s not a single soul in the Democratic Party who seems to believe in taking responsibility for the things they say and do. It’s insulting to the average American.
“It’s not only slanted but completely off, but I wouldn’t expect more from these propagandists. I pray for them and for their sanity. No nation-state can survive if its states start to get involved in land lease negotiations with other countries without the consent of the federal government. Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora are united in that effort and I stand in solidarity with them. No amount of harassment and lies will ever change that,” Omar said in a post on X.
Omar has said plenty of antisemitic remarks during her years as a representative for the people of her district and has managed to get nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Enough is enough. She’s gone too far with these statements and it’s time she pay the price for it. DeSantis is right. If she wants to protect Somalian interests so badly, she can do so from her country of origin.
