A new poll from CBS News/YouGov has some very bad news for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley in the Republican Party primary race against former President Donald Trump. Usually, a person who is running for president can pull a victory in their own state due to familiarity and of course, in Haley’s position, policy since she was the governor. People basically know how she would function as the commander-in-chief. Unfortunately, Haley is not faring well at home. Not even a little.
According to Newsmax, a total of 65 percent of voters in the state say they are backing Trump, with only 30 percent saying they will cast a ballot for Haley. The primary in South Carolina is two weeks away. That’s a lot of ground to try and make up in such a short amount of time.
Check out other poll results:
- 46% say would consider voting for Trump because of his record as president.
- 16% said they would consider voting for Trump to show support during his legal fights.
- 40% said they know what to expect from him.
- 8% said they prefer a man as president.
- 52% say the word “likable” applies to Haley.
- 32% say the word “likable” applies to Trump.
- 60% say they approve of the job Haley did as governor of South Carolina, while 22% say they disapproved; 17% were not sure.
- 82% say they approved of the job Trump did as president, while 15% say they disapproved; 3% were not sure.
- 24% consider Haley to be part of the MAGA movement, while 76% say she’s not.
- 81% say they believe Trump fights for people like them, while 19% say he doesn’t.
- 56% say Haley fights for people like them, while 44% who say she doesn’t.
- 7% say they want abortion legal in all cases.
- 20% say they want abortion legal in most cases.
- 55% say they want abortion illegal in most cases.
- 18% say they want abortion illegal in all cases.
The poll, which was conducted between Feb. 5-10 and contained results from 483 registered voters in the state, has a margin of error that is plus or minus three points.
At the end of the day, Haley doesn’t have much of a chance of getting a win in the primary. If she waits to jump out of the race until the primary in South Carolina, and she loses big time to Trump, as this poll seemingly suggests she will, then it could spell the end of her political career. Or at least damage it significantly. It would probably be better if she pulled out of the race and placed her support behind Trump for the White House.
I don’t know if she’ll take that course of action. It seems she’s really been playing up the establishment angle here and trying to look like a “girl boss,” which, coupled with rumors of infidelity to her husband, are creating some pretty negative optics for her to overcome. Without a dramatic shift to the right and an abandonment of the establishment in the future, she might be proverbially shooting off her own foot.
Guess we’ll see in a couple of weeks, won’t we?
