Say what you will about comedian and host of “Real Time” Bill Maher, but at least the guy isn’t afraid to slam his own side of the political aisle when they do stupid things. While I don’t agree with most of what he believes or says, there are a few issues where he hits the nail square on the head and drives that baby right through the wall. Recent comments he made concerning mistakes the Democratic Party has made going into the 2024 presidential election definitely fit that description.
The comments came during an appearance that Maher made at the Aspen Ideas Festival this week.
According to Mediaite:
Maher participated in a talk with English journalist Tina Brown in which he called out modern political tribalism and at one point ripped into younger liberals so much that Brown had to tell the comedian and Real Time host he’s “very cantankerous” as he continued on. Maher argued Democrats are doing themselves no favors ahead of November’s presidential election.
“Part of it the left has to own. They are aggressively anti-common sense,” the popular comedian said. “The Democrats keep running on this one idea, saying to the American people, ‘You can’t possibly think you can do worse than Donald Trump.’ And they keep saying, ‘Yes, we can. Yes, we can.’”
Maher at one point asked the audience if any of them were Trump supporters. The room stayed quiet. Maher argued there were absolutely Trump supporters in the audience, but they weren’t comfortable coming forward as Trump supporters in that group. The same awkward silence would be the response at a NASCAR race if he were to ask for people to admit being to being supporters of President Joe Biden.
He then made the case that this kind of tribalism is what is causing so much of the extremism we’re seeing in modern politics. The discussion about the left’s many contributions to this form of tribalism ultimately led the talk show host to chat about younger liberals, which is a demographic on his side of the fence he’s been open about despising.
“Tear down statues of Lincoln? Maybe give communism another shot? Get rid of the border patrol? Get rid of capitalism? White supremacy has never been worse? Gender is always just a social construct? It’s okay to have penises in the women’s swimming pool, in women’s prisons?’ No, it’s not that I’m old; it’s that your ideas are stupid,” Maher ranted.
I’ll be honest. When I read this comment I actually stood up and slow clapped. Dude is right. Period. On these things, we totally agree. Man, if only more Democrats thought this way. We’d get along a whole lot better and probably heal much of the division that’s torn the country apart.
Brown tried to stop the flow of common sense from Maher by interjecting and referring to him as being “very cantankerous” on the subject, but that didn’t phase him at all.
During one point of his appearance he repeated his admission that he believes Biden is going to lose bigly to Trump in November. Again, we agree.
Maher also at one point echoed his recent admission that he believes Biden is headed towards a major loss. The comedian was referring to “as good as it gets Republicans,” meaning Republicans who have stood against Trump’s claims of election fraud, naming Republicans like Liz Cheney, Mike Pence, and Mitt Romney.
“That’s as good as it gets. If you can’t talk to those people, you’re just abandoning the country to half the people who are even worse, who are going to vote for Trump this next time and they are and he very likely will win and then what are we going to do?” he pontificated. “I think we should keep the dialogue open.”
