During the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, the moderators for ABC News, David Muir and Linsey Davis, frequently interjected and interrupted Trump to do inaccurate “fact checks” as well as argue with him, overstepping their boundaries and interfering in the event.
When it came time to talk about Harris’ pet issue, abortion, she made the false claim that Trump is planning to sign a federal abortion ban. The former president has denied this and rejected that idea on multiple occasions and has never suggested he was going to take that course of action. He has, however, said that he accomplished what he set out to do with abortion, which was turn the issue over to the states by getting Roe v. Wade overturned.
Trump then shifted the discussion to the topic of late term abortion. According to Trending Politics News, after the former president delivered his answer, Davis stated, falsely that late term abortion is not legal in any state in the Union and did not give him an opportunity to respond.
Despite Davis’ false claims, several Democratic politicians have endorsed the idea of full-term abortion, including former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. When asked what would happen if a mother decided to “abort” a live baby, Northam stated that the child would be “made comfortable” before a decision whether to kill them was made. Elsewhere in the debate, Muir falsely claimed that Trump killed an immigration bill that was approved in Senate committees. The bill would have allowed up to 10,000 illegal aliens a day, provided tens of millions in funding for NGO’s and lawyers to speed up asylum claims and accelerated a green card handout.
The bill also allocated hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other nations. During the debate, Muir falsely claimed that Trump “killed” the so-called border deal that would have simply capped illegal immigration at current levels, which have surpassed records in consecutive years. Muir also claimed that there are no reports of Haitian illegal aliens killing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. While police departments have yet to verify any reports, several town residents have urged city officials to do something about the issue.
However, numerous police reports have verified that the former president’s claims were accurate and true. The GOP nominee was cut off and fact checked a number of times by both moderators during the event, all the while Harris was allowed to tell fibs left and right without any worry of being stopped, corrected, or questioned. Neither of the hosts of the debate bothered to press her concerning Harris’ past support for a fracking ban, healthcare for illegal immigrants, or fact checking her on repeating the “very fine people” lie which has been debunked by Snopes.
Trump should insist the next debate, if there is one, be held on Fox News or some other network that will ensure both candidates are held to account for their claims and policy positions. Only a substantive debate like that will help sway voters.
