It was only a matter of time before Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar wormed her way back into the headlines for some new scandal, and lo and behold, that time has finally arrived. Although it’s new and juicy, it’s connected to something that’s been reported on in the past, just with brand new developments.
New reports have stated that sources close to Omar, in fact, one of her closest pals, has come forward and confirmed that the congresswoman’s second husband was indeed her brother. The purpose of the relationship was so that her brother could get immigration papers.
The same friend also revealed that the marriage was a huge scandal in the Minneapolis Somali community, a great deal of time before Omar rose to political infamy.
Of course, as one would expect, Omar has denied, denied, denied that the marriage was any sort of scam or that the two of them were related in any way. Along with that, mainstream media outlets have referred to any conservatives questioning Omar’s narrative “conspiracy theorists” as a means to discredit them, but alas, there appears to be some vindication.
But according to Abdihakim Osman, who is friend with Omar’s first — and third — husband, says it was well established among members of the community that the marriage was a scam. Osman also revealed that a Christian minister performed the ceremony as Muslim imams would have known the two individuals and that they were related and would have refused to marry them.
“What we know is that Omar married her first husband, Ahmed Hirsi, in a 2002 Muslim ceremony. However, as the Daily Mail points out, ‘like many in the immigrant community, [it]was not registered with the state,'” The Western Journal reported.
“Osman met Hirsi when Omar’s first husband was working at a barbershop, then later worked for him when he opened a hookah business. The couple had two children before Ahmed Elmi appeared in the Minneapolis Somali community. He told the Daily Mail that Elmi, who presented himself as effeminate, was sent from the U.K. to Minneapolis for “rehab,” although one gets the impression this did not involve substance abuse,” it added.
“People began noticing that Ilhan and [Hirsi] were often with a very effeminate young guy,” Osman went on to say about the relationship. “He was very feminine in the way he dressed — he would wear light lipstick and pink clothes and very, very, short shorts in the summer. People started whispering about him.
“[Hirsi] and Ilhan both told me it was Ilhan’s brother and he had been living in London but he was mixing with what were seen as bad influences that the family did not like,” he added. “So they sent him to Minneapolis as ‘rehab.’”

Osman then compared both weddings, going on to say, “When [Hirsi] and Ilhan got married, a lot of people were invited. It was a big Islamic wedding uniting two large clans in the Minneapolis community,” he said. “I would say there were 100-150 people there.” However, “When she married Elmi, no one even knew about it.”
“No one knew there had been a wedding until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later,” he explained.
Originally, the scandal was far more focused on Hirsi than it was on Omar’s brother.
“He was a footballer, he promoted a lot of Somali shows, he was very popular,” Osman further elaborated. “So the scandal was about [Hirsi’s] brother-in-law more than Ilhan’s brother.”
Rumors swirled the pair were brother and sister, but due to the lack of paperwork from Somalia, it couldn’t be proved. At the time of the marriage in 2009, Omar was separated from Hirsi and since the marriage wasn’t legally recognized it wasn’t something in the way.
“She said she needed to get papers for her brother to go to school. We all thought she was just getting papers together to allow him to stay in this country,” he says Omar told him. “Once she had the papers they could apply for student loans. They both moved to North Dakota to go to school but she was still married to [Hirsi]. In the Somali way, the only marriage that mattered was the one in the mosque. Ilhan came back to Minneapolis all the time to see her family, but her brother didn’t come with her.”
Omar divorced Elmi in 2017 then remarried her first husband, Hirsi, in 2018. Only this time the whole thing was legally, having been done in a civil ceremony. Strangely, Omar had a child with Hirsi during the time she was married to Elmi.
“Hirsi and Omar divorced after she was discovered to be having an affair with her chief fundraiser, Tim Mynett. The two are now married, and Hirsi has remarried as well,” the report said.
It’ll be interesting to see Omar tries to navigate this new landmine thrown in the middle of the road.
