Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) isn’t finding a whole lot of support for her call to consider impeachment for President Donald Trump following his bombing of nuclear facilities in Iran. In fact, it seems like most of her colleagues are well aware this is a futile course of action.
It stated with Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) who made it clear impeaching the president wouldn’t work, also sticking up for Trump’s destruction of the Iranian nuclear program. Fetterman is a strong supporter of Israel, so his position is not surprising.
What is surprising, however, is former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) who also slapped down AOC’s call for impeachment saying, “No, no that’s a big threshold to cross. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
What makes such a statement so shocking is how strongly Pelosi supported the infamous “Iran deal” during former President Barack Obama’s presidency.
“A nuclear Iran is unacceptable to the United States, to the world and, in particular, to Israel,” the California Democrat went on to say, according to an article from Politico published at the time. The deal is “intensifying our vigilance over every aspect of the entire Iranian nuclear program.”
Obama and Pelosi spoke by phone Monday night and other top Obama administration officials called Democrats who have been active on Iran shortly after the final accord was made public.
The early effort paid off with Pelosi. The California Democrat announced Thursday her “strong support” for the deal — and said she would personally lobby her fellow House Democrats to back it. She’ll join an established pro-deal whip operation in the House that’s run by Schakowsky and Reps. Lloyd Doggett of Texas and David Price of North Carolina.
Given her total hatred for all things Trump and her former support for the Iran deal, her not wanting to support another impeachment effort is a bit surprising. Perhaps she is well aware of the fact that despite the popular adage, when it comes to trying to boot the president from office, the third time will not be the charm.
While there have been a number of Democrats come forward and claim the strike was unconstitutional, it seems AOC was one of only a small number from the party to call for impeachment.
“The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers,” Ocasio-Cortez stated in a post published on X. “He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”
According to The Hill:
Article 1 of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to “declare war,” one of the largest powers held by the legislative branch. In the past, however, presidents of both parties have struck adversaries militarily without approval from Congress. Ocasio-Cortez argued that by striking the Iranian nuclear facilities without authorization from lawmakers on Capitol Hill, the president breached the Constitution and congressional war powers.
“The strike came after days of debate in Washington over whether the U.S. should get involved in the Israel-Iran conflict, which escalated after Israel struck Iranian nuclear sites in what it dubbed a preemptive attack, prompting back-and-forth strikes between the two countries in the Middle East,” the report concluded.
