Sen. Chuck Grassley, (R-Iowa), who serves as the Senate’s president pro tempore and is also chair of the Judiciary Committee, revealed that he was deeply “offended” and “disappointed” by the rant President Donald Trump went on against him in a social media post. The comments were made as a result of Grassley seeking to uphold the tradition of blue-slip objections to nominees who are tapped to serve on district courts and as U.S. attorneys.
Look, we’ve had Trump as president long enough to know that sometimes, when he doesn’t get his way, he flies off the handle. He’s a man filled to the brim with passion and sometimes it gets the better of him. It’s best to develop a thick skin and not let these spats affect judgment. And complaining and whining about it only makes Grassley look weak. Nobody wins in a situation like this.
“Last night, I was surprised to see President Trump on Truth Social go after me and Senate Republicans over what we call the blue slip,” Grassley went on to say in a statement used to open a Judiciary Committee hearing on nominations.
“I was offended by what the president said, and I’m disappointed it would result in personal insults,” he remarked.

Grassley says precedent must be upheld.

The president also reposted a Truth Social post that accused Grassley of being a “RINO,” short for “Republican in name only,” and “sneaky.” Trump vented his frustration at Grassley over his decision to respect blue-slip objections from Democratic senators who oppose candidates nominated to serve as district court judges and U.S. attorneys in their states.
“Chuck Grassley, who I got re-elected to the U.S. Senate when he was down, by a lot, in the Great State of Iowa, could solve the “Blue Slip” problem we are having with respect to the appointment of Highly Qualified Judges and U.S. Attorneys, with a mere flick of the pen,” Trump ranted in a post on Truth Social.
“Democrats like Schumer, Warner, Kaine, Booker, Schiff, and others, SLEAZEBAGS ALL, have an ironclad stoppage of Great Republican Candidates,” Trump continued, referring to objections to nominees from the Senate Democratic leader and Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).
Chairs for the Senate Judiciary Committee haven’t traditionally proceeded on nominees for federal district level judicial and prosecutorial nominees unless both of the senators representing the state where the districts are located return the blue-slip documents showing they approve of the chosen candidates.
Several other members of the GOP supported Grassley in his push back against the president’s criticism.
“Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Judiciary Committee, said it would be a mistake to get rid of blue-slip objections from home-state senators to district court-level nominees,” the article concluded.
