On Monday, U.S. Border Patrol took fire from a gunman in what officials are calling an ambush that deliberately targeted them for doing their jobs to secure the border and protect our country. Officers working out of the Border Patrol annex facility located in McAllen, Texas, opened fire on the lone gunman killing him during the shootout.
Both agents and local law enforcement were present when the incident occurred. No one, other than than the gunman was killed. However, one member of the McAllen Police Department was struck with a bullet, but suffered non-life threatening injures. What a miracle that is, especially when you look back at the recent shooting in Idaho — another ambush — that resulted in several firefighters being killed.
“This morning an individual opened fired at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas. Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter,” the Department of Homeland Security went on to say in a statement to Fox News. “This is an ongoing investigation led by the FBI. More information will be shared as it becomes available.”
“Law enforcement officials say they believe the shooter deliberately targeted border control personnel. More details are set to be announced at a press conference later on Monday,” Trending Politics News reported.
This comes only three days after another officer was shot on duty outside of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Prairieland Detention Facility, which is also located in the Lone Star State.
“We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the [US Attorney offices] and our law enforcement partners,” wrote Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in a post on X.
“The Department [of Justice] has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible,” he continued.
Suspects were arrested around 11 p.m. local time on Friday night after an officer with the Alvarado Police Department responded to a report of a suspicious person, Fox News reported. When the officer made contact with the group, he was shot in the neck. He was flown to Fort Worth Hospital and later released.
Armed suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended with help from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and other local authorities. Monday’s shooter was armed with tactical gear and a high-powered rifle, the Houston Fox affiliate reported. ICE is expected to increase its headcount by thousands after President Trump signed into law new allocations giving the agency hundreds of billions of dollars to hire an additional 10,000 officers. Each is expected to receive a $10,000 signing bonus.
The push for additional personnel is part of the current administration’s promise to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in our nation’s history. Tom Homan, Border Czar, said that he has complete confidence the Trump administration will be able to hit its goal.
“Look, this isn’t easy. Ten thousand ICE officers? Never happened before,” Homan said in an interview with Politico on Friday. “But I’ll say this: It’s about time … with more money, we can do more.”
