Popular social media influencer Deja Foxx, who decided to give politics a go, ended up getting her backside handed to her in the Democratic Party primary in Arizona. The seat she was running for was left empty by the death of Rep. Raul Grijalva in March. Foxx lost the primary to the deceased congressman’s daughter, Adelita Grijalva.
My, isn’t that simply poetic?
According to a report from Forbes, the Associated Press called the race at around 11:20 p.m. Eastern time. A total of 65 percent of the vote had been counted. Grijalva, at that point in the race, was obliterating Foxx by 41 points. A loss like this should really make Foxx re-evaluate further involvement in politics.
Here’s more on this from Forbes:
Foxx, a 25-year-old political content creator who has over 395,000 followers on TikTok, was running for Democratic nomination in Arizona’s 7th District after only turning the minimum age to serve in Congress in April. Grijalva, 54, who previously served as the Pima County Supervisor, was initially seen as the clear frontrunner in the race but Politico reported internal polling from Foxx’s campaign suggested a tight race.
Foxx was one of the youngest campaign staffers on Kamala Harris’ first presidential campaign in 2020, and has continued to produce political content on liberal issues. Foxx was also chosen as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in media for her work on social media campaigns for companies including Prada and Nike, as well as her political work.
After the brutal slaughter of Foxx’s political aspirations, Grijalva got on Instagram and wrote, “This is a victory not for me, but for our community and the progressive movement my dad started in Southern Arizona more than 50 years ago. We…delivered a message rooted not just in fighting back against a dangerous and tyrannical administration – but in fighting for something: for our democracy, for the dignity of working people, and for the values that truly define Southern Arizona – justice, equity, and opportunity for all.”
Grijalva’s father served 22 years in Congress before passing away in March after complications from cancer treatment. His death left a critical seat open in a swing state that Trump won with a total of 52 percent in the 2024 election.
The state’s 7th district typically leans left, which essentially means that the individual who wins the primary usually goes on to take the victory in the general election. We’ll see if that holds true this time around, especially after the massive rejection of liberalism by the American people last election.
