In news that is going to leave MAGA movement supporters even more frustrated with the current administration than they already were, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that President Donald Trump “would not recommend a special prosecutor” concerning the Epstein files.
Although, when you look back at the experiences Trump has had with special counsels, perhaps his decision to forego one in this instance is understandable. Much of his first term was plagued by the investigation of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Mueller headed up a probe to determine if Trump colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election away from twice failed Democratic Party candidate Hillary Clinton.
While ultimately not finding much of anything that would prove the president engaged in such a scheme, Mueller did waste a lot lot of taxpayer dollars and time (two years) during the investigation.
“That’s pretty much what would happen under any special counsel to investigate the Jeffrey Epstein investigators. Forget about any immediate disclosure of anything new. The questions that MAGA minds want answered would instead get buried for months or more. Rumor and innuendo would reign. And if the special counsel emerged after a year and announced there really wasn’t much to see here, would any of the Epstein theorists really be convinced? Unlikely,” The Wall Street Journal reported.
Mr. Trump says he wants Ms. Bondi to put out more information, “whatever she thinks is credible,” and that’s fine, subject to judicial orders and sensitivities to privacy, which is a real concern for accusers and victims. It’s easy for those on the outside to demand more disclosure, since they don’t have to make those hard calls or be accountable for them.
The unknowable question is what would be left after the sensitive materials are scrubbed. Alan Dershowitz, the lawyer who represented Epstein, wrote in our pages this week that Epstein never created any client list. “The FBI interviewed alleged victims who named several ‘clients,’” he wrote. “We don’t know whether the accusations are true.”
What’s really interesting about this report is how it indicates the WSJ folded like a collapsible tent after President Trump completely obliterated them over a story they ran on Thursday. The president threatened to sue the news outlet after they ran a piece about him allegedly participating in the writing of a birthday letter to Jeffrey Epstein.
It was a rather crude and sexually explicit letter. However, Trump denies he ever wrote such a message, taking to Truth Social to issue a response to the Journal saying the “supposed letter they printed by President Trump to Epstein was a FAKE.”
“President Trump will be suing The Wall Street Journal, NewsCorp, and Mr. Murdoch, shortly. The Press has to learn to be truthful, and not rely on sources that probably don’t even exist,” a Truth Social post published on the president’s account says.
He has a good point. The press have lied over and over again about him and his activities ever since 2015. That’s a decade of false narratives cooked up to destroy his reputation and hinder the work he’s trying to get done in on behalf of our nation.
The statement added, “President Trump has already beaten George Stephanopoulos/ABC, 60 Minutes/CBS, and others, and looks forward to suing and holding accountable the once great Wall Street Journal.”
With landing punch after punch on the mainstream media, you’d think they’d get the point by now, but alas, it does not appear to be so.
