As we all wait with bated breath for the 2024 presidential election to come around, many folks have wondered who might be running for the Republican Party. The two individuals that seem to consistently come up in conversation are former President Donald Trump and current Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
According to a report from The Daily Wire, there has been a number of rumors floating around saying that DeSantis won’t run if Trump decides to give the White House a go in 2024, however, there’s no quote that says this, so just chalk it up, at this point, to wishful thinking.
However, Trump has stated that if he does decide to run, he believes DeSantis won’t.
Trump, though, has said that if he throws in his hat, DeSantis won’t. “I do think if I run, he won’t,” Trump went on to say back in December 2021. “I know they try and create a friction. I don’t think it exists at all. It might, you know, you never know. If he wanted to run, that’s OK with me. I think we’d win by a lot. But he’s good. And he’s done a good job as governor.”
DeSantis has been asked numerous times if he’s considering a run for the presidency, to which he has responded by saying he’s totally happy serving the people of Florida.
“I’m not considering anything beyond doing my job. We got a lot of stuff going on in Florida. I’m going to be running for reelection next year,” the Florida governor said way back in September 2020.
So it appears that nobody knows anything about anyone potentially running for president in 2024.
However, we do know that Trump has not asked DeSantis if he is going to run.
“I don’t know if Ron is running, and I don’t ask him,” Trump said during an interview with The New Yorker for an upcoming cover story. “It’s his prerogative. I think I would win.”
The interview then reveals that there is a bit of friction between the two men.
“The thing that grated most was that, as Trump considered running in 2024, DeSantis did not rule out a campaign of his own. The more plausible DeSantis has become as a nominee, the more people have speculated that he might decide to take on Trump,” the magazine revealed.
The writer of the piece then said, “Trump told me that he was ‘very close to making a decision’ about whether to run…. In nearly every poll of likely Republican contenders, Trump still has a solid advantage: DeSantis’s constituency was Trump’s first. Trump seems to want to keep it that way. A consultant who has worked for several Republican candidates said that the former President had talked with confidants about ways to stop DeSantis: ‘Trump World is working overtime to find ways to burn DeSantis down. They really hate him.’”
Honestly, I highly doubt that DeSantis and Trump hate each other. Sure, Trump is known for holding a grudge over silly things sometimes, but I don’t think that’s the case here. I think there is deep, mutual respect because the two of them are so similar in their beliefs.
Then again, we don’t really know anything about what is going on behind closed doors, do we?
