Republican lawmakers are determined to let future Supreme Court leakers know that if they try to pull some shenanigans like the infamous leaker of the opinion draft that was released last month concerning a case that might end up overturning Roe v. Wade, there will be some severe and very heavy consequences, to include a possible maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $10,000 fine.
According to a report from TheBlaze, Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, has introduced a brand-new bill, along with GOP Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, which would create a brand-new set of penalties for any individual who leaks information concerning impending cases from the Supreme Court.
The bill, known as the Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act — could they really not come up with a better name? — is a direct response to the leak that occurred in May.
“The recent leak was an attempt to publicly intimidate justices and undermine the integrity of the Court — all while putting lives at risk,” Cassidy went on to say in a statement. “My bill holds leakers accountable and takes away any hopes of profiting off their crimes.”
” The Stop Supreme Court Leakers Act would impose a $10, 000 fine and up to a 10-year prison sentence for those convicted of leaking confidential information from the Supreme Court. It would also seize any profits derived from the leak, including book deals or cable television contributor contracts,” TheBlaze reported.
The press statement Cassidy put out provides a list of information that would be considered illegal to leak from the court:
- Internal notes on cases heard by the Supreme Court of the United States.
- Any communication between the chief justice of the United States or an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and an employee or officer of the Supreme Court on a matter pending before the Supreme Court.
- A communication between officers and employees of the Supreme Court of the United States on a matter pending before the Supreme Court.
- A draft opinion or a final opinion prior to the date on which such opinion is released to the public.
- Personal information of the chief justice of the United States or an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States that is not otherwise legally available to the public.
- Any other information designated to be confidential by the chief justice of the United States.
Rubio went on to say that Supreme Court leakers need to “face serious penalties.”
“The leak of a draft opinion of Dobbs not only undermined the integrity of our judicial system, but also continues to spur threats of violence against Supreme Court Justices and crisis pregnancy centers. This bill would ensure that leaked confidential information from the Supreme Court is a criminal offense,” the Florida senator said.
“The egregious leak of a draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health harmed the Supreme Court as an institution, particularly if that betrayal was done to intimidate justices or influence the outcome of the case,” Hyde-Smith stated concerning the leak. “Anyone who chooses to leak confidential information from the highest court in our land should be held accountable, and that’s precisely what this bill seeks to accomplish.”
The leak ended up inspiring a massive wave of domestic terrorist attacks against pro-life organizations and ministries from pro-abortion extremists such as Jane’s Revenge, TheBlaze reported.
There was also a man arrested several weeks ago outside the Maryland home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh who has now been charged with attempted murder. The suspect has pleaded not guilty.
