Wisconsin Supreme Court Makes Major Decision On Absentee Ballot Drop Boxes

The Wisconsin Supreme Court, which is currently under the control of conservatives, made a major ruling concerning the use of absentee ballot drop boxes, that is definitely going to ruffle the feathers of liberals all across the country. The court decided that the boxes can only be placed inside election offices.

If you listen really hard, the screams of agony from the left can be heard being lifted into the air, reaching the ears of conservatives like the sweet, sweet, sound of victory.

Liberals have really been taking a proverbial beating over the last couple of months, haven’t they?

However, according to a report from The Hill, the Wisconsin Supreme Court did not address the issue of whether anyone other than the actual voter can return his or her own ballots by mail. Many other election officials had been arguing that drop boxes are a secure and convenient way for voters to return their ballots, though there are quite a few folk who aren’t so confident that’s the case.

The decision sets absentee ballot rules for the Aug. 9 primary and the fall election; Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson and Democratic Gov. Tony Evers are seeking reelection in key races.

The court’s 4-3 ruling also has critical implications in the 2024 presidential race, in which Wisconsin will again be among a handful of battleground states. President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in 2020 by just under 21,000 votes, four years after Trump narrowly won the state by a similar margin.

The popularity of absentee voting exploded during the pandemic in 2020, with more than 40% of all voters casting mail ballots, a record high. At least 500 drop boxes were set up in more than 430 communities for the election that year, including more than a dozen each in Madison and Milwaukee — the state’s two most heavily Democratic cities.

Not long after the former president lost the key battleground state, he, along with several other members of the GOP, made allegations that the drop boxes made it easier to cheat. Most Democrats, and a handful of Republicans, argued that the boxes were secure.

“The conservative law firm Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty sued in 2021. The state Supreme Court in February barred the use of drop boxes outside election clerk offices in the April election for local offices, such as mayor, city council and school board seats. The court ruled Friday on the question of whether to allow secure ballot boxes in places such as libraries and grocery stores,” the report said.

State law does not say a word about drop boxes and the court stated that absentee ballots can only be returned to the clerk’s office or another designated alternative location.

The Wisconsin Elections Commissions — which is bipartisan — informed local election officials that the boxes can be placed at multiple locations and that ballots can indeed be returned by folks other than the actual voter, however that’s now been put on hold pending a ruling from the Supreme Court.

Republicans within the Wisconsin Legislature have been attempting to pass laws that place strict limitations on the use of absentee ballots, however, Evers has slapped a big, fat veto down on all of them.

Many other members of the GOP have made similar attempts ever since Trump lost the election in 2020.

Whether or not you believe in election fraud to the level that some folks do, it should be the concern of all American citizens to take necessary precautions to preserve the integrity of the election system in our country. Not just for ourselves as conservatives, but also for the liberals in our midst as well.

After all, what makes our nation great is that we all have a voice in determining who runs our country and what value system we adopt as a culture.
