Rap artist Afroman, who is most well known for his hit 2001 single, “Because I Got High,” has filed official paperwork to be a candidate in the upcoming 2024 presidential race. He is set to run as an independent. I’ll give you three guesses what the main issue is on his political platform, but given the name of his biggest hit, you probably won’t need two of them. He’s a big fan of green, and I ain’t talking about money.
According to a report published by Breitbart News, the rap artist filed the paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission, which is a requirement to run for president. His presidential committee is called, “Joseph Afroman Foreman for President.”
The raper first announced his intention to run for the Oval Office back in December of 2022, saying, “I’m running for president in 2020-fro, I’m going to get recreational cannabis legal in all states. I need your vote.”
“While it remains unclear what Afroman’s stance is on an entire laundry list of issues, his platform will reportedly place an emphasis on the national legalization of marijuana,” the report said.
“Afroman’s ongoing persecution by the overtly corrupt Adams County Sheriff’s Department perfectly highlights that this corruption of leadership has trickled down to law enforcement all across the country,” the rapper’s campaign manager Jason Savage said in a statement given to TMZ.
“Criminal Justice Reform and Federal Marijuana Legalization remain two of the primary planks in his campaign platform,” Savage continued. “We are asking for your support as Afroman takes on this great and worthy cause as our Cannabis Commander in Chief.”
Just last month, a group of seven police officers filed a lawsuit against Afroman, stating that he improperly used footage taken during a police raid on his home in Ohio last year in one of his music videos.
Afroman has had a number of different run-ins for the law, one stemming from a 2015 incident where he punched a girl who got on stage, which ended with his arrest.
This whole thing reminds me of the time that Kanye West announced he was running for president, only I’m pretty sure Kanye actually thought he could win and would make a good commander-in-chief. However, it seems likely that Afroman is well aware he stands zero chance of actually landing in the White House.
I think the main point of this campaign is to get his name in headlines and draw attention to the marijuana issue, which seems to be his passion. Could probably have chosen a better, more important topic to try and effect change. Then again, he’s exercising his rights as an American citizen and is using this as a platform to air his grievances. That’s what makes this a beautiful country.
The question of whether or not marijuana should be legalized is a bit on the tricky side. There are a lot of health benefits of pot for those who use it medicinally, especially those who are suffering from severe pain such as cancer patients. On the other hand, it can cause a lot of issues when it is abused, like a lot of different substances. Just completely legalizing it seems like a bad idea, however, making it into a medicine to be used for treatment of various illnesses and conditions seems perfectly fine.
