Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, a current candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, just made a statement that is guaranteed to make the Departments of Education, Commerce, Energy, and the IRS, shake in their shoes. Which, of course, brings an ear-to-ear grin to my face. These particular agencies have caused so many problems in the U.S. ever since their creation that it’s long overdue for them to be dismantled.
And that’s exactly what DeSantis, a rising star among conservatives, has promised he will do if he should win the presidency, according to The Daily Wire.
“DeSantis, who has delivered on multiple promises in his state during his tenure, made the comments while speaking to Fox News’s Martha MacCallum, who asked him if there were any federal agencies he would attempt to eliminate,” the report said.
“We would do Education, we would do Commerce, we’d do Energy, and we would do IRS,” DeSantis proclaimed during the interview.
“If Congress will work with me on doing that, we’ll be able to reduce the size and scope of government,” he continued. “If Congress won’t go that far, I’m going to use those agencies to push back against woke ideology and against the leftism that we see creeping into all institutions of American life.”
Two of the departments that DeSantis has in his sights were first created by one of the worst presidents in the history of our nation, none other than the legendarily awful Jimmy Carter. Well, thanks to Obama and Biden, he has some competition for that crown, but nonetheless, he was not a good leader.
Carter established the Department of Energy back in 1n77. A few years later in 1980, we had the birth of the Department of Education, after the National Education Association, which had been calling for some kind of federal agency for ages.
“In order for a president to eliminate an agency of the federal government, the president must be granted presidential reorganization authority by Congress, and thus DeSantis would need to gain control of the Senate and keep control of the House to have a chance to set his plan in motion,” the Daily Wire reported.
“Presidential reorganization authority was first granted in 1932 and most recently granted to former President Ronald Reagan. Both former presidents George W. Bush in 2002 and Barack Obama in 2012 asked for such authority, but it was not granted. Neither president’s party had control over the entire Congress at the time,” it continued.
A week ago, DeSantis, along with the state of Florida, filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education, leveling accusations at the agency for unconstitutionally colluding with accreditation bodies to stop the governor from increasing transparency and accountability with public colleges and universities.
“I will not allow Joe Biden’s Department of Education to defund America’s #1 higher education system all because we refuse to bow to unaccountable accreditors who think they should run Florida’s public universities,” DeSantis proclaimed.
“Throughout my time in office, I have made it a priority to bring transparency and accountability to higher education and to reorient the mission of our colleges and universities away from purveying destructive ideologies and back toward the pursuit of truth and the preparation of our students for success,” he went on to add. “The Biden administration’s attempts to block these reforms is an abuse of federal power.”
The lawsuit also pointed out that the postsecondary institutional accreditor in Florida, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, issued a threat against the accreditation of Florida State University “merely because FSU was considering the State’s Commissioner of Education for university president.”
I would love to see both the IRS and the Department of Education disappear. The damage done to generations of Americans by both of these agencies is incalculable. The DoE has done nothing but transform public schools into indoctrination centers. It’s time for it to go bye-bye.
