Today is the 4th of July, which is when we all take a day off work, grill out, jump in the swimming pool and then, late into the evening, after the sun has made its descent over the horizon, we light stuff on fire and watch it explode. I mean, does it get more American than that? I don’t think so. Of course, there is an actual purpose for all the celebrating.
It’s Independence Day. On this very date, back in 1776, a group of brave souls signed their names on a document we call The Declaration of Independence, written up by Thomas Jefferson, who later became the third president. These men were staking their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to tell Great Britain we would no longer be subjected to the tyranny of King George. It was an act of high treason against the monarchy, which carried with it the death penalty.
Without this, the greatest nation to ever exist in the history of humankind would have never been established. These men and the women who supported them were the very definition of the word, “patriot.”
However, according to the Associated Press, the word “patriot” is now a big no-no. Yes, that’s right. The AP decided to celebrate Independence Day by lecturing everyone on how the word “patriot” is problematic. Good grief.
“In the article, the outlet argued that the word had been overtly political and taken up by extremist groups, used in ways that made it less about love for the country and more about hatred for certain minority groups,” The Daily Wire reported.
“The term ‘patriot’ in America has become infused in political rhetoric and school curriculums, with varying meanings, while also being appropriated by white nationalist groups,” the outlet stated in a tweet that included a link to the full article.

Liberals are absolutely insufferable, aren’t they?
“Today, the word and its variants have morphed beyond the original meaning. It has become infused in political rhetoric and school curriculums, with varying definitions, while being appropriated by white nationalist groups,” the article goes on to allege, citing information culled from the radical left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center to back up the idea that radical right-wing extremists had co-opted the word. “Trying to define what a patriot is depends on who is being asked.”
As has become par for the course with raging progressives these days, the Gaines Foster, a historian with Louisiana State University, cited the Capitol Riot that took place on Jan. 6, 2021 as evidence to support his theory that far-right extremist groups were now beginning to focus on the more “revolutionary” definition of the term, going on to say, “People began to lean less toward a commitment to democracy and more to the notion in the Declaration of Independence that there is a ‘right of revolt,’ and that becomes patriotism.”
Critics quickly noted that the timing of the article, along with the actual subject matter it covered, was more than a little suspect.
“Just can’t help themselves,” Chad Felix Greene posted on Twitter.
“AP can’t even take a break from dividing Americans on Independence Day. Pathetic,” another stated on social media.
“AP desperately tries to malign the word ‘patriot’ on #4thofJuly. Only thing it does is remind us how much they hate the U.S. #Patriots,” Andy Martin replied.
They just can’t allow folks to have one day out of the year to celebrate living in a free country. How miserable do you have to be to live a life of constant complaint despite being more blessed than 95 percent of the world’s population?
