On Friday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Justice Department granted the United States attorney who is investigating President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, “special counsel” status.
According to a report from ABC News, Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who was given his appointment by former President Donald Trump, asked Garland to be appointed special counsel earlier this week and he agreed it was the right course of action to take.
“On Tuesday of this week, Mr. Weiss advised me that in his judgment, his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a Special Counsel, and he asked to be so appointed,” Garland revealed in a statement.”Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to appoint him as Special Counsel. This appointment confirms my commitment to provide Mr. Weiss all the resources he requests.”
According to a report from the Daily Wire, Garland went on to say that the appointment of Weiss to special counsel “reaffirms” to the general public that he “has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deems appropriate independently, based only on the facts and the law.”
“As Special Counsel, he will continue to have the authority and responsibility that he has exercised previously to oversee the investigation and decide where, when, and whether to file charges,” Garland said. “The Special Counsel will not be subject to the day-to-day supervision of any official of the Department, but he must comply with the regulations, procedures, and policies of the Department.”
So what does this actually mean? According to Garland, the appointment “affords the prosecutors, agents, and analysts working on this matter the ability to proceed with their work expeditiously, and to make decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law.”
For those who might be wondering, the White House, allegedly, was not given any sort of advanced notice about Weiss being named special counsel in the investigation into the first son, two folks close to the situation told NBC News.
“Last month, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges after an original agreement brokered between his lawyers and federal prosecutors fell apart. Biden, 53, was expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax charges,” CNBC said.
“We are confident when all of these maneuverings are at an end my client will have resolution and will be moving on with his life successfully,” Chris Clark, Hunter Biden’s legal representative, remarked in a statement obtained by NBC.
Last November, Attorney General Garland named Jack Smith as the special counsel to investigate former President Donald Trump in two different probes. The first involves the discovery of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, while the other concerns alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
“Earlier this year, Garland tapped Robert Hur to investigate classified documents that were found in President Joe Biden’s office and residence. The intelligence documents were in Biden’s possession since he served as vice president under then-President Barack Obama,” the report concluded.
