On Friday, the Supreme Court agreed they would make a decision on whether or not a ban on bump stocks hailing from the Trump administration, is in violation of federal law. For those who might not be big into firearms, a bump stock allows a semi-automatic weapon to fire rapidly, making the gun similar to a machine gun. And we all know how much liberals hate anything that makes a weapon more efficient and better for self-defense.
According to a report from Newsmax, Supreme Court justices are going to hear a series of arguments in 2024 concerning the regulation that was put into effect by the Justice Dpartment after a horrific mass shooting took place in Las Vegas back in 2017. Several federal appeals courts have ruled differently on whether or not the regulation, which defines a bump stock as a machine gun fits with federal law.

The Supreme Court already is weighing a challenge to another federal law that seeks to keep guns away from people under domestic violence restraining orders, a case that stems from the landmark decision in 2022 in which the six-justice conservative majority expanded gun rights.The new case is not about the Second Amendment right to “keep and bear arms,” but rather whether the administration followed federal law in changing the bump stock regulation.
The ban on bump stocks took effect in 2019. It stemmed from the Las Vegas shooting in which the gunman, a 64-year-old retired postal service worker and high-stakes gambler, used assault-style rifles to fire more than 1,000 rounds in 11 minutes into a crowd of 22,000 music fans.
Most of the rifles were fitted with bump stock devices and high-capacity magazines. A total of 58 people were killed in the shooting, and two died later. Hundreds were injured.
The bump stock ban put in place during the Trump administration was very different from a ruling under the Obama administration from 2010 which determined that a bump stock should not be considered a machine gun, thus it was not prohibited by federal law. After the shooting in Las Vegas, the matter was revisited and the original ruling was considered to be incorrect.
How does a bump stock work? It takes the recoil energy produced by a semi-automatic firearm and causes the gun’s trigger to “reset and continues firing without additional physical manipulation of the trigger by the shooter.”
“A shooter must maintain constant forward pressure on the weapon with the non-shooting hand and constant pressure on the trigger with the trigger finger, according to court records. The full U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 13-3 in January that Congress would have to change federal law to ban bump stocks,” Newsmax said.
I’m not a fan of gun control no matter what, so to me, this is an unnecessary argument. The Second Amendment is simple and clear. Do not infringe on the right to bear arms. Bad people are going to do bad things, regardless of what tools are available. Rather than focus on measures that impact law abiding citizens instead of criminals, how about improving the mental health system so those that are prone to acts of violence are treated?
