Just a single day after President-elect Donald Trump stated that the Gulf of Mexico should undergo a name change and be forever referred to as the Gulf of America, a few congressional Republicans are working to take that suggestion and, in the words of Captain Jean Luc Picard, make it so. Yes, that’s right. This idea is becoming a piece of legislation. And apparently, there’s a whole lot of interest in going through with it.
According to The Western Journal, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, has already come up with the bill. This woman wasted absolutely no time. Talk about putting the pedal to the metal. Wow. Green actually shared the text of the legislation in a post on social media, along with a series of reasons for why she believes the idea should move forward.
“Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic humans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else while the Mexican government allows them to do it,” Greene stated in a post published on X.

“The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries,” she added. “It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as.”
Newsy: MTG is already drafting her bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America, and there’s “tons of interest” already to be original cosponsors, a source familiar tells me

“As soon as President Trump made his announcement, I directed my staff to get the bill drafted. We already have the bill written with legislative council and ready to file first thing Thursday morning. Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it,” she went on to share on her profile.
Alabamians know just how important the Gulf and Gulf Coast are for our great country.

Cami Mondeaux, a reporter for The Washington Examiner, also posted on X that “there’s ‘tons of interest’ already to be original cosponsors, a source familiar tells me.”
Republican Rep. Barry Moore who hails from Alabama, along with GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville from Alabama, said they give the bill a thumbs up. During a news conference that was held on Tuesday, while chatting about his concerns over Mexico failing to do their part to crack down on crime and help stem the tide of illegal immigrants into the country, the president-elect brought up the issue of renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America,” he told the press.
“What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate,” Trump added. “[W]e do most of the work there, and its ours.”
