Many folks on the left have been taking full advantage of a recent revelation concerning a security lapse in order to try and drop the hammer on U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, including Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California. This was a huge mistake on his part given his own past troubles with security breaches.
The congressman was more or less unknown and served as nothing more than a bench warmer in the party overall, until his relationship with a Chinese government spy was uncovered and blasted all over the internet and news media. Imagine this guy, who was romantically linked to a spy for the Chinese Communist Party, attacking Hegseth for a security breach.
It’s the definition of hypocrisy.
Swalwell attempted to sound witty and smart when he asked, rhetorically, if Hegseth had stepped down from his post following the debacle. The allegations against Hegseth are that the and others shared “war plans” in a group chat comprised of Trump officials where a liberal reporter had accidentally been invited to join.
“Wait. Pete Hegseth hasn’t resigned yet?” Swalwell stated on X. Again, big mistake. Conservative influencers on social media wasted no time pouncing on him for his hypocrisy.
Libs of TikTok creator, Chaya Raichik, quoted the California Democrat’s post, adding, “Didn’t you bang a Chinese spy?”
“Other commentators were similarly unsparing in their mocking of Swalwell as they replied directly to his post,” Trending Politics News reported.
“You didn’t after Fang Fang,” stated another account, using a nickname given to the Chinese spy by colleagues in the Republican Party.
Yet another went on to write, “Did he sleep with a Chinese spy too? Well, I guess that’s not ‘resign’ worthy.”
“You may want to sit this one out Eric,” an individual pointed out.
The report also stated:
The Swalwell schadenfreude comes exactly one year after Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) accused the California Democrat of hypocrisy. During a congressional hearing on Chinese government efforts to infiltrate the Biden-Harris administration, Waltz claimed Swalwell “knows a thing or two about how China penetrates our government.”
Swalwell, an ally of Biden, was previously investigated by the House Ethics Committee after his partner Christine Fang was named as a suspect in an investigation into Chinese spy programs inside the United States. Fang was believed to have targeted Swalwell’s campaign and up-and-coming politicians in California, according to The Hill.
Rep. Swalwell cooperated with the FBI in its investigation and was cleared of wrongdoing in 2023, but his opponents continue to wield the Chinese spy jokes as a cudgel to silence the previously vocal progressive. He has been heckled at town halls in his district and had public meltdowns after GOP colleagues have previously made jokes at his expense.
Keep in mind that the information released in this leak was not classified. It’s not as if these were deep, dark plans that required absolute secrecy. Radical liberals are doing their best to turn this into some sort of scandal or example of incompetence. I mean, that last part might be true to some extent. It was a dumb mistake, that’s for sure.
However, this is nothing like hiding an active president’s dementia or use of an autopen.
The non-classified leak was “completely outrageous and shocks the conscience,” House Minority Leaker Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) told reporters on Monday, adding Hegseth “has got to be the most unqualified person ever to lead the Pentagon in American history.”
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), no doubt grateful to have a pivot point after facing his own intra-party calls to resign, said, “This is one of the most stunning breaches of military intelligence I have read about in a very, very long time.”
Sometimes bad things happen. Mistakes are made. That’s the case with this situation. However, the individual directly responsible for this person getting added to the chat should probably be fired and made an example of.
