Another Republican In Name Only is apparently ready to be forced into retirement by his constituents by turning against President Donald Trump after spewing his opinions about changes that he believes need to be made to the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” What’s worse is he chatted with a left-leaning publication, Politico, about his problems with the legislation. Yuck.
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) wants to see edits made to the reduction of taxes on tips portion of the bill. President Trump campaigned on making tips tax-free during his 2024 campaign, and it’s a huge priority for him right now. Keep in mind, the average person who works in a job reliant on tips, like a server, only makes $2.13 an hour.
Tillis, talking with Politico, stated that the as bill stands now — it’s been approved by the House as is — isn’t fair to individuals who don’t work in jobs where tips are customary. He whined that a server would be eligible for breaks that someone working in a warehouse would not, even if they made similar yearly salaries.
First off, the average restaurant server is not likely going to make as much as the warehouse worker. Even if they do, it’s because of the tips from generous people, which can fluctuate up and down, unlike the salary made by a warehouse worker. Tillis is out of touch with reality, which is something that happens often with people who get money.
According to Trending Politics News:
President Trump believes tax breaks make it easier for those who rely on tips to succeed financially and grow over time into other industries. Tillis told the left-leaning publication that he wants to take a different approach that he feels would treat people with similar earnings more fairly.
He also floated the very unpopular idea of removing the $40 billion tip proposal from the bill altogether. Tillis then pointed out that this specific measure is supported by both Republicans and Democrats, therefore, it wouldn’t be difficult to pass it, separately, at a later time.
This man is straight diabolical. No way he gets re-elected when the time comes. He just flushed his political career down the toilet.
“Maybe there’s a different way to achieve what they’re setting out to do,” he said in the interview with Politico.
“Tillis’ comments come as Senate Republican leaders say they intend to make changes to the sprawling tax, energy and immigration package approved last month by the House and still get it to Trump’s desk by their July 4 recess. That could be difficult if individual senators, who have lots of leverage given Republicans’ thin majority in the chamber, demand major changes,” the article stated.
Making tips tax-free was one of the big promises the president ran on during his campaign last year. The current House draft of the legislation would create a brand new tip deduction for folks working in industries where tipping is customary, as long as their yearly salary doesn’t top $160,000. Tillis proposed an alternative that would create “some other benefit” that would be made available to a wider group of workers, but would still keep budgetary costs down and limit it to those with lower incomes.
The Republican senator then explained that he believed if the GOP tried to make the tip measure a stand-alone bill, Democrats would be gung-ho about voting “yes” on it.
“I’m at a loss for why Democrats would vote against it,” Tillis said. “They’ve already evidenced that they’re worried about voting ‘no’.”
