British commentator Piers Morgan created quite a lightning storm on social media Friday afternoon after he published a post — which he quickly deleted — that seemingly heaped praise on President Donald Trump from meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to try and bring their war with Ukraine to a swift end.
The real question is whether or not the commentator’s comments were genuine in the first place or a poor attempt at satire. Given the image he chose to accompany the caption, I’m going with the latter.
“As @realDonaldTrump lands in Alaska, I wish him the very best of luck in trying to secure an end to the horrendous war in Ukraine. It’s refreshing to see a U.S. president who genuinely prefers peace to war,” Morgan posted.
What makes some think this could be satire is the image of Trump features him wearing red knee pads as he disembarks from a plane, which seems to be a sexual innuendo about the method the president is going to employ to uh, secure, the deal. It’s disgusting to say the least.
The fact Morgan deleted the post so quickly indicates people weren’t catching on to the joke he was attempting to make. Journalist Tara Palmeri, who shared Morgan’s post online is one of those individuals for whom the punchline just didn’t land.
While Morgan is off making crude political jokes, Trump is participating in one of the most critical diplomatic moments of his career and the modern day. The president landed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a strategic military installation located in Anchorage, Alaska, have a sit-down, face-to-face meeting with Putin.
The goal of the meeting is to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine. Trump, truly a president who does want peace and has worked hard to create it the world over, has pushed the two nations and their leadership to bring this conflict to an end.
President Trump has not been shy about issuing threats of “severe consequences” if Putin attempts to obstruct peace talks, a tough stance that shows the rest of the world America is back on top of the geopolitical dogpile.
Is there a chance that Morgan may have been serious and just didn’t think through his choice of image for the post? Sure. If that’s the case, he needs to come out and say so. Because that’s not how people are interpreting it. Clarification would go along way in salvaging the post, which, despite being deleted, is now online forever.
