The fallout out from the National School Boards Association’s ill-conceived letter to the Department of Justice has begun. The NSBA last week made news by apologizing for its insidious “domestic terrorists” letter it sent to the Justice department, which Attorney General Merrick Garland seized upon to threaten parents with FBI investigation if they vocally opposed such matters as Critical Race Theory being taught in schools.
But on Tuesday, the NSBA got bad news that the Ohio School Boards Association is now ditching the NSBA.

“Ohio School Boards Association voted to terminate its membership with the National School Boards Association,” education researcher Corey DeAngelis reported.
“OSBA’s decision to terminate membership and affiliation with the NSBA is a direct result of the letter sent by you to President Joe Biden late last month,” the OSBA made sure to make clear.
“The letter purported to be sent on behalf of state associations and school board members across the nation,” the letter said. “This assertion could not be further from the truth. OSBA was not notified of the letter, nor were we asked for our thoughts on the matter. If we had been consulted, we would have strongly disagreed with the NSBA’s decision to request federal intervention as well as your claims of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.”
“OSBA believes strongly in the value of parental and community discussion at school board meetings, and we reject the labeling of parents as domestic terrorists,” it went on. “There is tremendous value in allowing and encouraging the public to have meaningul input into the decision-making process.”
“The NSBA letter demonstrated just how out of touch the national association is with the concerns of local school boards and the principle of local control,” the letter added. “OSBA can no longer allow the NSBA to speak for our association or our membership and no longer see the value of continued membership.”
The letter’s honest and brutal assessment of the NSBA’s abuse of trust and authority is almost certain to set off a domino effect of other local associations coming to agree with the OSBA assessment of the unacceptable situation.
The NSBA letter was infamously held up by Attorney General Merrick Garland in an October 4 memorandum that announced that the FBI would be dispersed to coordinate with local law enforcement on how to handle school board meetings with parents upset about the radical CRT agenda in schools.
“Citing an increase in harassment, intimidation and threats of violence against school board members, teachers and workers in our nation’s public schools, today Attorney General Merrick B. Garland directed the FBI and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to meet in the next 30 days with federal, state, Tribal, territorial and local law enforcement leaders to discuss strategies for addressing this disturbing trend,” the memo said. “These sessions will open dedicated lines of communication for threat reporting, assessment and response by law enforcement.”
“According to the Attorney General’s memorandum, the Justice Department will launch a series of additional efforts in the coming days designed to address the rise in criminal conduct directed toward school personnel,” the press release continued. “Those efforts are expected to include the creation of a task force, consisting of representatives from the department’s Criminal Division, National Security Division, Civil Rights Division, the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, the FBI, the Community Relations Service and the Office of Justice Programs, to determine how federal enforcement tools can be used to prosecute these crimes, and ways to assist state, Tribal, territorial and local law enforcement where threats of violence may not constitute federal crimes.”
Last week, the NSBA issued a formal letter to constituent school boards associations that apologized for the letter to the Department of Justice.
“As you know, there has been extensive media and other attention recently around our letter to President Biden regarding threats and acts of violence against school board members,” the NSBA’s letter to members began. “We wanted to write to you directly to address this matter.”
“On behalf of NSBA, we regret and apologize for the letter,” the letter said. “To be clear, the safety of school board members, other public school officials and educators, and students is our top priority, and there remains important work to be done on this issue.”
“However, there was no justification for some of the language included in the letter,” the NSBA continued. “We should have a better process in place to allow for consultation on a communication of this significance. We apologize also for the strain and stress this situation has caused you and your organizations.”
The NSBA announced it will be conducting a formal review of its processes and procedures, including the proceedings leading to the letter.
As Becker News reported earlier, the NSBA’s letter to the Department of Justice had the secret backing of radical education groups. The NSBA was selected to issue the letter because it was not a radical “usual suspect” with an anti-parent track record. The letter went so far as to accuse the parents of ‘domestic terrorism and hate crimes.’
In October, America First Legal sent a letter to the Department of Justice’s Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz. The AFL legal memo’s filing with the DOJ Inspector General was broken by conservative talk radio host and author Mark Levin.
“The federal government is using its power to silence and intimidate American citizens,” Levin said. “They’re trying to chill free speech.” Mark Levin then read portions of the letter, which was posted online.
The national-level education groups have increasingly become pawns of the Democratic Party. Furthermore, they are becoming more openly hostile to parents’ role in guiding their children’s education.
Recently, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, praised a Washington Post opinion piece that argued:”Parents claim they have the right to shape their kids’ school curriculum. They don’t.”

Nevertheless, schools around the country have been hijacked by leftist ideologues who seek to use them as tools to spread their radical indoctrination agenda. Despite the left’s claims that it is a myth that Critical Race Theory is being taught in schools (thus belying how toxic an ideological program it is), the largest teacher’s union, the National Education Association, formally adopted a plan to implement Critical Race Theory in all classrooms nationwide.
The Democratic Party is mortally afraid of the parental backlash to Critical Race Theory, as well as unscientific school mask mandates, which has been taking place at school board meetings across the country. At Merrick Garland’s appearance before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, the House GOP attempted to show a video of these parents and the Democrats effectively censored it with objections. The NSBA’s retraction of its letter is a symbolic victory in the sense it creates a conundrum for the Biden administration. The National School Boards Association, which represents thousands of local school boards, acted foolishly to become a partisan servant of the Biden agenda. The decline in its membership is sure to follow and should provide a lesson to those organizations that seek to defy the will of the people.
