We’ve no doubt seen video footage of the so called “insurrection” at the US Capitol back on January 6th, 2021, played and replayed countless times on dozens of different news outlets and on social media sites. Within the next few days on the anniversary of that ill-fated event, we’ll surely be forced to witness that event all over again.
However, this time House Republican leaders are finally growing a backbone. They’re demanding that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) answer some fundamental questions concerning the lack of preparation in securing the Capital “before” the Trump demonstration took place, and that her select committee is in fact nothing more than an attempt to distract and “cover-up” from her obvious missteps surrounding the riot. This also begs the question; was it deliberate, or simply incompetence?
GOP Conference chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), along with three other Republicans, held a press call on Monday outlining the party’s position on the riot, which Pelosi is currently probing through with her Democrat-led select committee.
Stefanik began, “This partisan sham committee is not focused on answering the most important questions of why the Capitol was left unprepared that day and how we can ensure this never happens again.”
“Most importantly, the American people deserve to know what the mainstream media refuses to cover: The fact that the only office that is off-limits to this partisan sham investigation is Speaker Pelosi’s office,” Stefanik continued. “This is a political weapon, and it’s used to cover up for Nancy Pelosi’s failures.”
GOP House Administration Committee ranking member, Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL), who was also on the call, detailed in a letter he wrote to Pelosi that he demanded she allow both the House Sergeant-at-Arms and the House Chief Administrative Officer to comply with repeated requests by Republicans for information regarding how the Capitol was protected on January 6th.
Davis accused Pelosi of continuing to “obstruct Republican access to House records relating to the security preparedness of the Capitol complex on January 6th, 2021.”
He also cited a number of letters he sent last year, requesting information from both security officials and Pelosi herself, which were never responded too.
According to Davis, another former USCP Chief, Steven Sund, and former Sergeant-at-Arms, Paul Irving, had “conflicting” accounts of what actually transpired during the January 6th riot. Namely whether Irving refused Sund’s request to call up the National Guard because of the “optics”, and more importantly who within the “chain of command” was directing Irving as the peaceful Trump demonstration suddenly spiraled into chaos.
According to House rules, the Speaker of the House is in charge of the Capitol police and, by extension, security. The fact that Capitol police are shown within numerous video clips to be either passively standing by or, in some instances, actually helping demonstrators navigate their way through the Capitol, has been virtually ignored by both Pelosi’s hand picked committee and the mainstream media.

Fortunately, Republicans aren’t standing by waiting for the midterm elections to legitimately investigate what actually occurred on January 6th. Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN), chair of the Republican Study Committee tasked with crafting and delivering GOP talking points, also spoke on the call. He noted that his committee is conducting parallel investigations, and has held “numerous interviews” with USCP officers and others with a “role related to security” at the Capitol.
“We keep hearing a repeated theme,” Banks said, explaining that “policy and personnel changes that occurred in November 2020” suggested that the intelligence community was ill-equipped to manage a riot during that critical period within the Capitol.
